Acceptance rate for Class of 2016?

What is the acceptance rate for this year's applicants?

The admissions office told me it was about 16%

based on earlier numbers given for RD, it was about 6%

Doubt it…

@crazymomster, did you forget to take the yield into account? I remember seeing the number that applied around 15,500 I think, that’s just off of memory. Then if they want to admit 1000, and the yield is 40% they accept 2500. That makes the admit rate about 16%.

I don’t remember what the numbers were… they were posted on this forum somewhere :-). Maybe it was that they accepted just over 1000 this year. I’ll see if I can find something in one of the threads.

I also believe it was somewhere around 16% or so. More competitive this year due to a larger yield last year. What I don’t understand is why none of the websites discussing admissions use more recent numbers. For example, US News still have 21.3%. I don’t think that that was last year’s rate (was it?). Also, why do you guys think the yield was so high last year? Sorry to highjack the threat, I was just curious about this and want some other opinions.

I think that admissions just didn’t account for the increasing popularity.

But why did Rice suddenly become popular? I thought we were a well-kept secret. :)

Last year’s admit rate was ~17%. It dropped to between 15-16% this year, I believe. Largely because of the incredibly high yield last year.

From what I read in the thresher in September, they were oversubscribed by 60 students or so in 2011.

I understand why the admit rate dropped. I don’t understand why our yield went up is what I am saying.

The acceptance rate for last year was 18.7%, a drop from the previous year’s 21%. It’s odd that US News listed a higher, incorrect acceptance rate for last year, though. I asked a friend at Admissions about it and he’s unsure where the US News number came from - maybe they guessed? haha But, hopefully, this year they’ll get it right - even though acceptance rate is a fraction of the selectivity ranking, which is itself a small percentage of US News’ overall ranking.

It’s difficult to know with certainty, but I think the yield increased because the school has been receiving lots of great publicity over the past few years. This may be due in part to better advertising on Rice’s side (especially the Centennial-focused stuff) and to ranking highly in things like the Princeton Review’s Best Quality of Life (1) and Happiest Students (1) categories. Plus, record numbers of prospective students are visiting and staying overnight on campus for things like Vision and Owl Days. They get to experience Rice for themselves, and, for many students, that seals the deal.

Exact numbers for 2011 and 2010:

2012: 15,500 applied (estimated). ??? accepted.
2011: 13,803 applied. 2,568 accepted (18.6%)
2010: 12,393 applied. 2,639 accepted (21.3%)

Latest US News Report used admission data from 2010.

Rice has varying formats for presenting its admissions data, and I think that may have contributed to the US News confusion - unless it is common practice for US News to use outdated data for a university’s acceptance rate figures (evidence?).

Also, after browsing Rice’s historical undergrad admissions info (1994-2011) I noticed Rice was really popular in 1994 for some reason: 42% yield rate, 7935 applicants for 633 spaces, 19% acceptance rate. In the 1994-2011 period, yield dropped as low as 33% (2007) but has since recovered well. The number of applicants dropped as low as 5740 in 1999 but, with expansion and advertising, more than doubled from that to 13816 in 2011. The acceptance rate increased from 19% (1994) to as high as 28% (1999), and it only returned to ~19% last year in 2011.

^I noticed these figures are slightly different from yours, RedYellowBlue. Dunno why.

Also, 2600 were accepted last year to give a class of 1000 matriculants (38% yield), although they were aiming for 950. Because of that over-enrollment, President Leebron promised to cap this year’s entering class at 935. This strict limit means probably about 2400 or fewer of the more than 15125 applicants this year were likely admitted, giving a roughly 16% acceptance rate.

@ Duncaroo - your data is more accurate as the Class of 2015 from the Rice website is more updated.

If they accepted fewer students this year due to the over-enrollement last year, does it mean that wait-listed students MIGHT have a better chance?

Just to guess

I believe so. Since they really wanted to make sure they didn’t over enroll this year, I think they will be using the WL this year, possibly pretty heavily depending on enrollment.

@SchoolAdvice

Thanks! I really hope so too. Rice has been my dream school for long time. Do Rice evaluate FA package for wait listed students in same manner as accepted students?
