This just occured to me. I received my acceptance letter from USC and one of the booklets said that out of the 35,000+ people that applied, 2,600 got in. Is it just me, or does that seem like a really low acceptance rate?

That is the size of the freshman class. Depending on their yield rate, they may have actuall accepted 10,000 students. Read the letter carefully.

They usually accept around 8,500. The 2,600 number are those who matriculate.

USC, in the last few years, has had a “yield” of about 33%. That means of the students who are offered admission, approximately 33% choose to accept that offer. (Remember that college applicants these days often apply to 8 - 12 schools, and each applicant can only attend one university.) USC will present approximately 8,000 admission offers to try to match their target enrollment of 2,600.

I believe that the plan was to reduce the number of admitted students by a couple hundred this year, due to the increasing rate of students opting to attend USC. I remember last year or the year before we had a problem where we had too many freshmen so some had to live in upperclassmen housing (and I’m not talking about Troy/East, Cardinal Gardens, and Century) and not in the traditional freshmen dorms.
