Acceptance rates at Colgate

hey i was just wandering why colgates high Early Decision rate (60%) is so high? It makes it look like it is alot easier to get into ed, is this true? thanks.

A lot of the recruited athletes come in via ED.

ooh ok, but enough to raise the ed acceptance to 60%, that sounds awful high

people are less likely to do ED if they're underqualified, so the ED pool has a higher percentage of qualified applicants and thus a higher acceptance rate than RD. People apply ED if they're convinced it's a match (and they're often right) but some people just apply RD on a whim because its not binding or anything.

I believe schools love to be "loved"- they don't have to guess if you're really interested in the school when you apply ED, and therefore the acceptance rate might be a bit higher for those with slightly lower stats- you are being rewarded, to a degree, for your commitment to the school.

The 60% number is also out of date - I've seen it somewhere online too. According to the Colgate website, for the class of 2009. the ED acceptance rate was 48.9% -638 ED applicants, 312 accepted.

I do think athletic recruits partially accounts for the ED rate: you have a relatively small school with Div I athletics. Most of the recruited athletes come in via EDI or EDII. I don't know if this is true but I also bet that a good percentage of enrolling legacies apply ED (this is the case at many schools).

I agree that Colgate, like many other schools, loves to be loved :) It's also a nice thing to go to a school where a large % of the student body picked it as their first choice.
