and now for this year for:
UCLA they said they only accepted 4,960 out of the 57,000 freshmen applications that they had recieved
this is an acceptance rate of only 8.22%

and then for UCSD they only accepted 3,600 out of 48,000 applicants
which in a mere acceptance rate of 7.5%

for UCLA the drop is 13.48%
nd for UCSD the drop is 29.8%

both of these drops in acceptance rates are dramatic

I did manage to get into UCSD but I'm still wondering as to why these rates have dropped, and that too so dramatically?

I got into UCLA, but not UCSD. Wow, pretty surprised.

I’m not quite sure why the admit rates dropped so much, maybe because of increased competition?

Well, if you read the thing completely, it said the main reason was because the application pool was so competitive this time.

Also most of the people rejected got into at least one more UC (for me it was UCR, UCI and UCLA), so they don’t need to take all of the eligible.

As surprised as I am, I’m not feeling too bad. I feel disappointed, but UCLA was my second choice anyway. First is Berkeley

The universities know that not everyone who gets accepted is going to attend. They accept over 10,000 people and they expect about less than half of them to actually submit an SIR.

Ya, I think the OP was looking at two different numbers for two different years. I’m also 100% certain that UCLA wouldn’t accept 12000 one year and 4000 the next. The 4000 figure is probably the size of their freshman class, but I’m sure they admitted around the same amount of people this year as last year. The admission rates probably dropped slightly just because of the increase in applications, but I’m sure they admit around the same number of people every year. 8% is around what Harvard is…I’m pretty sure UCLA is not THAT selective.

i agree. UCLA probably just mentions the actual number of spots available (as opposed to the actual number they accept) as a way to make rejected students feel a little better. I mean, if you calculate available spots/number of applications, that’s 8%. Surely, they accepted more applicants than that.

I’m surprised that someone intelligent enough to get into UCSD wouldn’t recognize the obvious impossibility of such a drastic decrease in acceptance rates.

this **** is frikkin hilarious cause ppl are havin a serious arguement over this
i was jus wonderin if nebody would catch tht i had written in the matriculation numbers instead of the actual acceptance numbers.
since the first replier just went along with me i just went along with him/her to see how long it takes for som1 to figure t out
