awesome post, Northwestern I believe wnt all the way down to 25% in the fall of 2007. :( Now it's a lot harder to get into.

I'm scared now :(

As am I...

Acceptance rates for the top med schools:

Harvard 4.7%

Johns Hopkins 6.2%

University of Pennsylvania 4.4%

Washington University in St. Louis 10.5%

UCSF 4.4%

University of Washington 6.2%

Stanford 3.1%

Duke 4.0%

Yale 6.5%

Baylor 6.4%

Columbia 4.5%

University of Michigan 8.0%

Someone always has it worse...

But Med School is more of a Graduate thing than an Undergraduate thing, then again one could argue that the pools at those schools are extremely self-selective.

*7. Stanford 3.1%
*

Ouch

I think a valuable comparison data set would be how many more applications per student is being generated. To say that 42/51 schools' admit rates declined screams out to me that HS seniors are ratcheting up the no. of schools to which they are applying.

Common app syndrome, eh? Because it's not as if the actual SLOTS in these top 51 schools has decreased (most likely increased). It's just that a huge bubble of people now commonly applies to 10-15 schools -- generating more rejections.

Weil Cornell Medical College 4.3%

"But Med School is more of a Graduate thing than an Undergraduate thing, then again one could argue that the pools at those schools are extremely self-selective."

Yes. The pool of students applying to Harvard Med is much much much more selective than the pool of students applying to Harvard College (due to the huge attrition rate of premed which is typically around 60-90% at most undergrads).

T26E4,
You are dead-on with your comments. The expanding numbers of high school students generally and high quality ones in particular, have made college admissions very hard to predict. As a result, more hedging going and more applications being mailed out, more rejections being returned and "selectivity" appearing to go higher. I don't have quick access to the application data, but if anyone has it or knows where to find it, then please post.

norcalguy -- those statistics are INSANE. i'd like to know what the "rejects" do!

blahhh. ick. i know lehigh went down to 32% this year. -7.
i completely blame the common application.
there should be a limit on schools you can apply to. like 5. and don't whine and say "well what if you don't get in anywhere???" then it's your fault for not researching enough and finding a good match for you. haha i'm sooo bitter. but i still think the limit is a good idea.

If others could fill in their schools for what the rates were for Fall, 2007, that would be really helpful. Here is the beginning with Northwestern and Lehigh added in.
