Acceptance Rescinded?

Hi, I was wondering under what conditions would Cornell rescind acceptances? I was accepted ED into the AAP program and just a week ago, I was under my school's disciplinary committee from plagiarism. I read something off sparknotes and incorporated some ideas into a write up and didn't cite. I wasn't reading it to take ideas but to confirm my knowledge of the context of a book so this was not in any way intentional and I admit to my mistakes. My school is making me write and send a letter to admissions to explain this and also my college counselor is sending one too. I'm really scared that my acceptance will be rescinded. How severe is my case? Does anyone know whether this has happened? Should I offer to take a gap year?

Be sincere about mistakes you made. Don’t try to blame others or try to trivialize it. Let them know you have learned from your mistakes. Do you know what your college counselor is going to say? Is he/she going to say this is the first offense and you are an overall good student? I think a lot of it is going to depend on what your CC writes in that letter.
I don’t know how Cornell will come out on this and this is cause for concern. I don’t think taking a gap year will help with Cornell. If Cornell is to rescind its acceptance, they won’t readmit you later and you most likely will need to take a gap year. Some schools will care more than others. This will always be on your record.

I would advise you not to post any more information on this forum about this incident just in case any adcoms is reading it. I wish you well.

Why is this plagiarism if you put similar ideas in your own words? Students often write on ideas presented in class which may be similar to sparknotes ideas. I don’t think it’s plagiarism if you didn’t write almost verbatim to sparknotes.

oldfort: thanks for the info. I will try to be as sincere and apologetic as I can.
Latuza: I think its that I didn’t give sparknotes the credit for the ideas. Its straight up plagiarism if you copy it word by word, but it’s still a kind of plagiarism if you take someone’s ideas and not credit them.

I think they’re overreacting and I hope you’re given a fair evaluation. It’s nice to know you’re an upstanding person and I hope things work out fine.
