Acceptance Thread

See, I find it so weird for you to all to say that Michigan is comparable to the Ivies. I got into Michigan (and didn't apply to the Ivies) but also am realistic that my stats are not good enough to get into them. I'm not sure if you mean they have similar enviornments, but in terms of prestige (I LOVE Michigan BTW, and plan on attending) I think the Ivies will always be ranked the best of the best. That being said, I think most students will choose the Ivies over Michigan, UNC, UVA etc.

I agree with you. Some of the IS kids seem to think this is the best school in the US. Most pretentious shirt I've ever seen said "Harvard: the Michigan of the East."

I think it's a bit pretentious to say that the Ivies are the best; in many cases, this is true, but look at, for example, the University of Chicago, a school known for its academic rigor above all else. I've also heard from Barnard students that (in case you didn't know, they partner with Columbia) that Columbia classes, while there may be more homework, are less challenging than Barnard classes. You are making a sweeping generalization--rankings are not based simply on difficulty.

I have a few reasons why I would pick Ivies over Michigan and visa versa. If I do not get enough aid at the ivies, Michigan's low in-state cost will be an important factor. However, I would like to get away from home and experience new places. I have also heard bad things about professors that are bad teachers, and are there because of their good research and not their teaching abilities. There would also be more opportunities for me as an athlete at an ivy as they are less competitive. There also is that prestige factor.

I never said they were the best. Sometimes schools like Stanford/Duke/WashU rank higher than some ives like Brown/Cornell. There's not doubt in my mind that that Michigan is impressive, especially for a public uni, but some IS kids compare think we're on par with schools like MIT, Caltech, UChi, Berkeley.

Idolfan, the Ivies are more selective, not because they are better, but because they are much smaller. If Michigan decided to enrolled freshmen classes with just 1,500 students, Michigan would be as selective as Harvard.

And the Ivies aren't all more prestigious. Sure, Harvard, Princeton and Yale are. But most other Ivies aren't. High schoolers, who are only impressed with selectivity, will be impressed by the Ivies. Not so highly educated parents, who link private and cost with prestige may also think the Ivies are impressive. But highly educated people generally won't place Michigan lower than most of the Ivies.

As for students chosing the Ivies over Michigan, it depends on the Ivy. Michigan loses the cross-admit battle against the Big 3 (so do the remaining 5 Ivies). We also lose the cross-admit battle to Dartmouth and Brown because most students who apply to those schools are looking for the LACish atmosphere. However, Michigan holds its own against Columbia, Cornell and Penn.

Ungst, what you heard about Michigan (bad teachers etc...) is partially true. It is often exaggerated though. And Ivies have those issues too, particularly Columbia, Cornell, Harvard and Penn. However, you have two good reasons for wanting to go to an Ivy (to get away from home and to be a college athlete), so hopefully, you will get into your ideal school.

Yeah I know a lot of people who got into Cornell and Penn who came to Michigan and cost wasnt a factor

As an Asian, Many of our asian students do think ivy schools are much better than UM and they mainly focus on rankings when they choose schools. However, I think UM is a great school. There's not much difference between UM and those private schools ranked before UM such as Cornell, Wash U, Brown, etc. The only reason for their higher rankings than UM I guess is that they are all private schools.

Many companies in Asia really focus hard on Ivy leagues. I had talked to mostly my bosses and a few other people that I worked with, and they were saying that the Ivy league name really carries out there. That's not to say that UM's name doesn't carry any weight at all.

That being said, I think the only school I'd go to over UMich is UPenn and only because of Wharton.

Quick question for those accepted. How long did it take you to recieve something in the mail after you were accepted on WA? And how long did it take to find out about honors?

Got my package in the mail about a week after the email and they sent me honours information about 2 weeks after.

I got my email about 15 hours after, acceptance packet one day after. Then again, I DO live 30ish minutes away from AA...

I got my email three days before Christmas, my packet about a week later, and my honors info two or three weeks after that.

Now I just need to sit and do the honor's essay..

should you be worried.
that makes me laugh.
i applied 11/14, and still no answer
so to answer your question, no, you should not be worried.
i should be worried.

Still no decision here and applied in October.
So, patience.

moment, you know you didn't apply late? Anything after november I'd consider late for any college with rolling admissions..

yeah mine was finished 1/14 and i submitted sometime around december and havent heard a decision. I heard a rumor how those who submitted early and still didnt hear a response got either deferred or rejected so im hoping thats not the case for me
