Acceptance!

Wavechaser, what was your unweighted gpa?

I just got my deferral in the mail…I thought I was going to get in. Great.

Ya Ya, thank you.
Yes, we hoped for a bit more from LMU (though this is an estimate only). Chapman’s calculator estimated $25k yearly merit scholarship + good work study, etc, with EFC of around 6-10k. That would be great!
What major did your D apply too, Ya Ya? Did she apply to chapman, also?

accepted to engineering! still waiting to hear about merit aid, no one has heard anything from this year? I really need a good merit scholarship before I consider LMU.

If your chosen to attend the Presidential Preview weekend you’ll know before February. If you get invited to that, then you’ll get at least 5,000 for the Arrupe scholarship and you’ll be in the running for the “half-ride” or “full-ride”. You’ll probably get invited to this if you’re letter says you were admitted Honors at Entrance. When you get a financial aid offer later it will include lmu grants and merit scholarships that you are considered for just by being admitted. Just turn in your FAFSA ASAP.

I think everyone, besides icemangervin26, is worried about scholarships. Paying for college is stressful, and the thought of having to pay back thousands of dollars in loans terrifies me.

Yes. It’s very challenging, for parents, too. Has anyone besides us and Ya Ya tried LMU’s net price calculator? Worried about DS getting hopes up. He’s accepted for animation, but we can’t send him without good aid (and I don’t mean loans).
The net price estimate said 20$k merit aid, but I have no idea how close to the mark that might be. He was not accepted directly into honors program, but has good stats.
Sigh…

I can’t say for sure of course, but it sounds like he’ll get good aid and would be a great candidate for at least the Arrupe scholarship. Even if he didn’t get honors at entrance, he could still apply. In previous years when people got honors at entrance it wasn’t related to the actual honors program unless after all the interviews they were selected to get a full ride.

I tried the net price calculator, but I’m kind of in my own unique situation, so I’m not relying on it to much.

Thank you, lynnmarie. Are the scholarships you mention separate from merit aid? In addition?
And good luck to you, too. Best wishes to everyone!
DS LOVED LMU. He met some animation/film profs and current students when touring Film and TV. He’s still talking about how creative, embracing and stimulating it was. The walls of the animation lab were covered with drawings and student doodles.
Since he’s already accepted EA, we (mom and dad) will be crushed if we can’t make it happen b/c of inadequate FA. We ard debt-shy and will tackle the balance out of pocket, pay as we go.
Thanks for listening. :)

Accepted EA!
Major: Environmental Science
from Orange County, CA (:

I’m sure results will vary, but for curiosity I put in my D’s stats from 2 years ago into brand new net price calculator, and it spit out almost exactly what she received. @ Presidential, D was honors at entrance but didn’t get Presidential invite, it’s not a sure thing. Not really on topic, but she is film production major and has loved experience so far.

Jtmoney, that’s heartening! Makes us feel hopeful for DS (aspiring animator/creative director).
Your D got the Presidential? Is it renewable for all 4 years?
Did D also have lots of community service?
DS is an Eagle Scout with lots of focused, passionate service. Hoping that also helps with Merit consideration.
Thanks for posting.

No, she didn’t get it. My vague memory is honors at entrance is top 5%, Presidential is interview for more like 1 or 2%. She had decent community service, not outstanding. My impression it was based more on grades and tests than anything else, She was Val and 1980 SAT. She got generous Grant, Arrupe scholarship, they basically covered her FAFSA need. They don’t cover full need for most students, I think she was probably on the bottom end of students covered in full. Second year aid was identical to first, I think 3.0 GPA required for scholarship portion. Good luck.

Ah, gotchya. Thanks. It is good to know that your lmu aid was generous, that it continued through year 2, and that D is thriving & happy.

Thank you for posting. Very helpful for families like us, following in your tracks during these uncertain times.

Just found this forum. Applied EA for Film Production and haven’t received word yet. I’m going crazy and starting to worry I’ve been deferred or worse. It helps to know acceptances are still going out. I’m hoping I still have a chance…

3.5 unweighted, 3.7 weighted GPA
2030 SAT
IB Diploma Candidate

Hopeful: your stats are solid and it’s too soon to worry. Very few early acceptances are out. Give it two more weeks for EA. Hang in there.
That said, totally understand how hard it is to wait.

Looks like I’ve been deferred. :(

My son just got accepted. Do they post if there is an honors component to it on the “You’re In” announcement on Portal, or do you get that news in a letter later on if you’re going to get it at all?

They would tell your son in his acceptance letter. The scholarships I mentioned are a type of merit aid.

I was accepted a few weeks ago but I just joined CC.

I have a 3.49 unweighted GPA, 2050 SAT and 30 ACT. My junior and senior years I did a duel college-high school credit program, all of my classes were at a college. So they are considered advanced classes plus I have 2 years of college credit.
