Acceptance?

hello,
I am trying to get into the university of michigan-ann arbor. I live in michigan and have taken pretty hard courses. Heres my issue, in freshman year I had a bout with serious clinical depression that was actually due to PMDD. As a result, I was hospitalized in a mental hospital for two weeks at a time. I was hospitalized three times my freshman year. As you can imagine this took a toll on my grades. I worked my butt off just to get a 2.8. However, had I known that I had the right to demand extra time on assignments (my teachers did not give me the full time to make it up) I would have.
It get's worse though, right before my sophomore year I was diagnosed with systemic lupus. I have worked very, very hard to get to where I am today (gpa 3.296). I was even homebound at the end of my sophomore year (which is he** when your spanish teacher tries to tutor you in a subject she has no clue about... -_-).
I have taken moderately hard classes (AP chemistry, AP psychology, honors english, and honors biology) This upcoming year I am taking hard classes as well (pre-calc, ap bio, ap language, and I got into the second year of the medical careers program at our school). The second year is very hard to get into because there is 140 kids and only 60 spots open. I managed to get in despite being sick and hospitalized (medically for lupus). I almost four-pointed this past semester (four A's a B+ and a B). I also got a 3 on my ap psychology exam.
My act isnt great, its a 24 but each time I have taken the ACT I was very ill. I have been practicing and it looks like I might be able to get it up to a 30-31 with extended time.
I hope someone can tell me if it looks like I have a shot to get into Umich because I really, really dont want this disease to hold me back.

I would say a very slim chance. It sounds like you only earned around a 3.7-3.75 in your best semester, which would put you on the lower end of student’s who get accepted. The 24 on the ACT+ the low UW GPA is really going to hurt your chances. Admissions may be able to look past your GPA from freshmen and sophomore year, but I don’t think your application would be strong enough to get in based on your junior year performance and ACT score.

But there is still hope! If you have good ECs, can write an awesome essay (Maybe on overcoming your problems from earlier in high school?), and can bring your ACT score up to Michigan’s level, you could have a decent shot at getting in.

Additionally, make sure you note on your application your setbacks. The admissions officers need to know that you had those challenges in order for them to look at your application fairly. Another thing, apply early action if you can; that could help you out to a slight degree.

While I don’t think your chances are good, I have faith in you that you will make your best efforts in getting accepted! Good luck!

Based on stats alone, chances don’t look too great. However, you have some very difficult circumstances that your counselor should explain in your LOR. That being said, stats alone don’t always define the student, and it is possible that Michigan could overlook this, although looking at the class of 2017’s applicants, they rejected many highly qualified students.
