and a bunch of other crap that probably everyone applying to college has done

No clue what I look like to a college. You tell me. I'm just not sure what colleges are at my level. Any help would be awesome.

Chess team -- awesome. I am a chess player, and I was really active in my chess club in high school. Our team competed in local and state tournaments and even competed on the national level twice (with modest success). Well, for admissions purposes, I think chess looks good, but more influentially, if you are really good..as in, master level and beyond, some colleges will actually recruit you. I know that University of Dallas-Texas actually gives full ride scholarships for chess. Harvard, Stanford, and other top colleges have compettitive chess teams, and obviously these schools want to keep their chess teams competitive if possible. I'm not sure about UChicago in terms of chess teams/clubs. I'm not good enough play competitively in college. (USCF rated 1600ish)

Your SAT is solid, but not particularly high for UChicago. http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=1713&profileId=6

But you didn't give your GPA, so it's hard to determine your chances b/c GPA is the number one criterion.

avarge chances, I guess. Post a GPA though.

Chess, I love chess. I've only competed on the state level though, but my rating is pretty good. I think (uscf 2060 ish). I've won maybe 4 or 5 state regional comps though. I haven't played in a tournament since 10th grade though. We should play if we meet at chicago.

yeah i forgot GPA, but i didn't even realize how much it mattered ...

W: 4.38 ish
UW: 3.85 ish

o yeah ... and i'm not really that good at chess, not like master level or anything at all

your chances just increased a little

Talk to your college counselor about what schools are best for you, and where your statistics usually fall. They are the best resources for information about where students with your profile usually go.

Apply to the schools you want to go to.

That's my advice.

Coke? Weed? Hookers? Beer? Massive orgies with other dudes?

thanks for the incredible help guys ... unfortunately my guidance counselor is a damn moron and suggested ramapo and middlesex-rutgers co-op ... i think i'm above county colleges ...

I can relate, chessgeeksam. Sometimes, it's just a matter of luck whether or not you get a wise guidance counselor. At my public high school, we only had two post-secondary counselors for a graduating class around 500. My guidance counselor was nice and did his job as far as bureacractic work goes, but in the several meetings I had with him, his advice was very generic. Perhaps, I was not persistent enough. I would recommend talking to different counselors. I know that some of my friends had success doing this.

You must take control of the college process yourself and not rely on public high school guidance counsellors for anything but paperwork. Spend your time doing the research and generating your own advice.
