Acceptances are out!

Son accepted to Arts and to Science (physics) yesterday. Email sent at 9 p.m. yesterday from admissions services.
Acceptances are on Minerva today.

Arts and science? I heard that takes the longest jeez
mine still says Ready for Review. Application created 12/12 ):

Pbbuff ,my son was accepted from the faculty of arts BA and from the faculty of sciences BSc,
He hasn’t heard from the combined arts and science program yet.

They say they need my mid-year scores before they can decide. You got me all excited :P

PhilKenSebben, My other son is currently a student at McGill. He had to submit his midyear grades too, and was accepted in late February two ears ago. My younger sons stats are a bit higher. This year is the earliest that I have seen acceptances. In the past couple of years the majority of acceptances have been in February and March, so don’t worry.
My older son is in the BSc program and loves McGill.

What were your son’s stats?

Son’s test scores are high, SAT1 combined 2360, SAT subject tests in high 700’s,
6 AP’s all 5’s, taking 3 more senior year.
Grades are just OK , 4.1 weighted (freshman thru junior), upward trend and senior year all A’s but they don’t recalculate GPA until the end of the year. My son is a Canadian citizen attending a US high school.

what about your other son’s stats?

Similar test scores, SAT I’s 2260, five SAT II’s all high 700’s, 9 AP’s 5 and a couple 4’s
Not so great weighted GPA ( freshman - junior year) around 3.8 weighted, all A’s senior year though.

I’m still Ready for Review. I guess it’s kind of first come, first served? =P
I got it ready on January 6th =p

son’s now says mid term grades needed… it has been ready for review forever, think he applied in september. is that normal for them to request ie part of the process.?. if so i guess we missed that requirement otherwise could have sent them earlier. or is requesting mid terms only if he is borderline? is he?

canadian attending us school (actually dual citizenship)

stats act=33
wgpa= 4.13
sat II 730. 740. 740

My son, in his second year at McGill, had to send his mid term grades and ultimately was accepted. He also sent recommendations. I don’t know if they helped. obviously they didn’t hurt.
What faculty did your son apply to? Science (life sciences) and dual Arts and Science are the more selective.
Also, depending on the faculty, they look a certain subject grades. I heard one parent at our high school annoyed because her son was rejected with a B- in AP english instead of a the requires B+ in english. I suspect that there was another reason, maybe he submitted the application late or had other low grades.
Your sons tests scores and grades all look fine and you applied early too.
My younger son applied in mid November. He also sent his recommendations with the first marking period transcript.
Have many students from your son’s high school attended McGill?
I believe 5 or 6 went from our high school last year. The number increases every year.
Maybe McGill is more familiar with our school.

applied to arts and sciences for chemistry. he did send letters of recommendation. no one from son’s school has attended,
so its not routine to request them?

just checked application status and it says further review required with mid yr grades the only thing missing. it was faculty of science BSc Phys,Earth,Math&Comp Sci . Are they that particular about grades ie B- vs. B+ Son’s school does not use + or -. an 89 is still a B (and he has had a b)

hmmm just checked website again… i think schools began to mix together when doing these apps i see now the B+ in each pre-requisite but i remember son and i talking only about needing a B+ average overall, not the specific courses… well that may be a problem then …if given + and - on transcript he would be ok, but they dont so a b would be what they are looking at

Mine still says ready for review! I’m getting so anxious :///
And an 89 is a B+. I’m nervous about that too, I have a 2240 SAT, 740/720/700 SAT II’s, 9 AP classes, and an unweighted GPA of 3,7… but I’ve gotten ~83’s in English the last two years. I really hope they don’t count that against me :/

thats what i mean pbbuff, the couple of b’s he’s had were 88’s and 89’s i think but the transcript shows B, not the number mcgill wouldnt know if that was 80 or 89 and those unfortunately were in science classes

parent56 your son’s and pbbuff’s tests and grades are excellent, don’t worry.
Two years ago I remember McGill releasing batches of acceptances. West coast US schools seemed to hear first. Maybe my son’s large new england public school got reviewed early?
We were very surprised by such an early acceptance, The earliest that I have seen before was acceptances in the last week of January. It is very curious that no one else has posted an acceptance. Hmm, I better print it out in case it disappears. Honestly, I don’t think either of you have anything to worry about. Maybe having a brother at McGill helped??/

parent56: OH, i thought you meant it showed an 89 and not the actual B+. Well, if it just shows a B, I don’t think they can count against that because for all they know it could be an 89,4
NiceOldMom: Maybe. it says they “officially” come out the 29th, so maybe your’s just slipped through the cracks? I don’t know.
Does McGill factor in geographic diversity into their acceptances? It seems that 99/100 people never have heard of McGill down here in Texas, so I was wondering if that could help me out :p

pbbuff, I definitely think applying from Texas is an advantage. I remember the first person to be accepted two years ago was from Oregon and his Stats were not very exceptional.

thanks niceoldmom and pbbuff. son asked gc to send his mid year report but dont know when it will be sent, his school is on trimesters so dont know if she will wait until mid feb and send 2 semester grades or send it now with just one. we are in alabama.
