Acceptances: Celebrate, discuss, support here

Congrats to Jimmy from a Hopkins mom. And I have to say, like bethie and jym, that your thinking immediately of thanking your parents is a sweet and wonderful thing. Enjoy Bawlmer, hon*.

*"Hon" = Baltimore inside joke.

Just curious, what's the authentic way of saying "Baltimore" or "Bawlmer"?

Daughter's application submitted in the middle of September.
Did get acceptance package. She was offered a regent's scholarship but it's not renewable so looks she has more opportunity at MSU.

Actually, it's

"Bawlmer, hon."

Study up, Hopkins: Bawlmer, Murrylin is where the POE-leece drive araoun'
daown-taown in cars makin' sure everyone warshes their mawrbl steps 'n' sigh-walks.
(A true old Baltimore accent can be found if you can ever hear Spiro Agnew on tape. He was ex-vice-pres under Nixon, unfortunately. Everyone else from Baltimore is worth knowing.)

Congrats to all! Go CCers class of 2011..you know they are going to do awesome things!
D got a CSU acceptance back in Dec. (not too exciting, but hey it was still nice to know someone wanted her!) and then it was quiet for awhile, and we weren't really even thinking about it, and before we even started looking, last week 2 fat envelopes showed up in the mailbox on the same day! I called her to ask if I could open them, because i really didn't think they were admissions letters this soon, but she didn't pick up, so she got to open them herself when she got home. ...aaannndd they were her 2 EA acceptances with very nice merit scholarship offers! When it rains it pours, and it felt like it was pouring money that day... from U San Diego and U Miami. Now the wait is on for USC (hopefully soon) and after that all the rest...

We are so lucky to have such talented and hard working kids...well, maybe we parents had a little bit to do with it!

"We are so lucky to have such talented and hard working kids...well, maybe we parents had a little bit to do with it!"

Yeah, mom says that all the time...

DS hs been accepted at Iowa, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Minnesota. He has several other applications in to schools but won't here from them until end of March/early April. We are waiting to see what the final financial offers are from all of the schools.

I am concerned about his getting good housing. He has been admitted to honors programs at 4 of the five so far. Should we just go with that, send in the deposit now and then ask for the refund? That will tie up quite a bit of funds for several months.

Admitted to University of Michigan, Wisconsin-Madison and Texas-Austin!!

Hope the class of 2011 rocks!!

DS accepted to Rice University!!! I might have both my kiddies at Rice next year - 3 hours from home. Cool. Okay, so how do I pay for it all now!!!!
:) :)

MIT, Cal Tech, Ill, Mich, Rice and waiting.....

Wow, lots of prospective Owls on CC! Congrats to the kids of oldolddad, blackeyedsusan, anxiousmom and entomom!!

Congrts to all! Oldolddad, if I can answer any questions about Caltech or MIT, pm me

...and congrats to you patsomom! Go owls!

My son now has 2 great choices, Rice and Georgia Tech, which helps ease the sting of an early deferral. Still waiting on a few others, and on possible scholarships. Congratulations on all the new acceptances!

if any future owls (or future owl parents) have questions, let me know! Congrats all!

jenskate, S just got into Rice with very decent merit money. But we are from NJ and know next to nothing about the school. How do the grads fare outside the TX area?

I'll throw in one data point: my H (who grew up in TX) is a Rice grad with 2 degrees (BS and MSEE). He has had excellent reception by employers from OR to NY to CA, and is now a telecommunications researcher who is known and respected world-wide. He has excellent things to say about his Rice education, and your S (and you!) should have no concerns about an Owl's employability or respect anywhere!

I so wanted my son to apply to Rice. We live in NY right now but are moving to central Texas next summer, after he graduates HS.

I knew from reading about it that it would have been a great fit for him, and they give good merit aid too, but he would not even consider it, just because it's in Texas. He is really blind about that. Frustrating! :(

His acceptances so far:

Tulane (w/$18k scholarship, has also applied for Dean's Honor)
Bard
UVermont (only applied because it was a free application, and it was a safety school - accepted to the Honors program and they gave him a $3k scholarship - highest for out of state students)

Waiting on:
George Washington University (hoping for some merit aid too)
SUNY Geneseo
UC Berkeley
Amherst (reach)
Yale (reach)

I think he will probably end up at either Tulane or GWU. Both are good fits for him. We'll see how the scholarships end up playing out.

My daughter is in at College of Wooster with merit $$. Woohoo!
