Acceptances: Celebrate, discuss, support here

MIT, Cal Tech, Ill, Mich, Rice and now Washington University St. Louis and ...

congrats to all!

Son: Applied 5 schools & accepted: Marquette Univ. <coe with="" generous="" scholarship="">, Ill. Institute of Technology <generous scholarship="">, Appointed: U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy.</generous></coe>

CelticClan: Congrats and a special congrats on the Appointments.

I have to admit that I mostly use CC for information to pass on to my son, who doesn't seem to have time for it. I just happened on this thread & thought I'd go ahead & post. I recognize some of your names, and wish to add my congrats to all of your kids' acceptances.

Anxiousmom, sounds like we're in similar shoes. My son has been accepted to Rice & they didn't offer any scholarship money. He's also been admitted to UT Dean's Scholars Honors & UT Turing Scholars; haven't heard about scholarships from UT, yet. He will get National Merit somewhere, but it's going to be a long wait until April, when everything has come in. The financial packages will be significant in his final decision.

All the best to your families in making final choices!

Congrats to your son swkmom. He has some fine, fine options there! :)

oldolddad-

I will pass on your congratulations, thank you very much.

And big congratulations to all of the CC kids & parents! Great job! :)

Daughter happy today -- an acceptance from St. Olaf (love, love, love that some schools don't wait until April 1).

But, today she also also received her first rejection -- from McGill. :(. And the problem with a school like McGill is that she applied to two departments, so she can get rejected twice from the same school. Oh boy!(Haven't heard from the other department or school, or whatever you call it, yet).

Hey mstee,

I'm from Canada, and I know that all the major Canadian universities focus mostly on the applicant's academic merit. GPAs and SATs are always viewed with the utmost importance and weight. Therefore, the reason for your rejection could stand mostly derive from your daughter's academic performance in grade 11 and most importantly grade 12. Congrats on your St. Olaf acceptance, and good luck with the rest of your schools!:)

Tks. for the insight, Jimmy. D has a feeling that getting a C+ in physics on her last report may have caused a problem (first C in high school). It's okay, for awhile McGill was her #1 choice, but she had started looking more seriously at smaller schools before this rejection. So, it didn't sting as much as it could have . She has a great attitude about all this. I'm glad she is not stressing out, at least not at the moment!

Trinity College Dublin and University of St. Andrews (Scotland). Can anyone compare the two for me? Still waiting to hear from American Universities. Thanks.

Weenie, Your S has some most excellent choices! Will be interested to see how the final decision goes...

We have our fingers crossed for you, flootloop. If girls with lower SATs/GPAs than yours got accepted at Wellesley, you were competitive. That bodes well ... chances are good that you will be accepted into one of the schools you are waiting to hear from. Good luck!

flootloop, I'm certain that one of the schools you're waiting on, Oberlin, prides itself on on geographic diversity and likes to have representation from every single state. Does anyone know if that's an explicit value at the other schools, too?
At this time of year, I just want to be a cheering voice for everybody awaiting RD letters.
I hope you get to bring your sunshine up North. It's so much fun to see somebody experience her first snowfall!

flootloop

Did you apply ED II to Wellesley? I didn't expect RD apps would be getting rejections this soon. Good luck on the others. Sounds like you have some balance on your list.

I'm quite sure that most, if not all schools value geographic diversity. It's certainly mentioned prominently in any college description I've read (and I've read a lot!)

I'm hoping my son will hear early on a few--or even one (apart from his EA schools). He's applied to Oberlin too. He seems calm about it but I'm very impatiently waiting.

We recently got 3 feet of snow in one day, a record, and we're not looking forward to shoveling it all when it slides off the roof! It can be fun though.

Vermont--it was crazy! The snowplow got stuck in our driveway and we couldn't get out for 2 days. Very unusual, because we know how to deal with snow.

My husband went to Oberlin and loved it. I went to ASU for grad school many years ago and really enjoyed the warm winters, but I can understand you wanting a change. I hope you'll have a lot to celebrate, but it's good you already have choices.

Early write from Grinnell!! With a big scholarship!! I'm done worrying now, because I know he'd be totally happy there!

Congratulations, bethievt! That must be a relief!

Bethievt,
Congrats to DS!! Sounds like you guys are going to have an exciting month or two ahead of you! Had he made a decision about that other scholarship before he heard from Grinnell?

Counting down: Thank you! Money is a bit of an issue here, so he has to wait until everything is in and then think hard. I know he is struggling a bit already as one of his schools is coming in very, very inexpensive, but it is also his "lowest ranked" one. Well, it's good to have choices! :)
