My son was accepted this week.

SAT: CR620 M790 W630 (10E)

sat II: Math2C 740 Chem 750

His school does not give exact rank but he is second decile, probably ranked about 12th percentile. Very competitive public high school.

Good EC's and awards. Was not his school's Medalist but applied via Candidate's Choice Application and they did give him a decision within a month once his file became complete.

jdasmom: Did he apply ED or RD? Thanks

He applied RD. RPI had sent him a Candidate's Choice Application earlier in the fall, perhaps because he had taken a tour and attended an information session at RPI last spring. Once the Candidate's Choice application and all supporting materials are received by RPI they will give an admissions decision within 28 days.

Thanks, jdasmom. My daughter applied in mid-November but we weren't sure whether they would hold off RD until January 1st. That's good to hear. Congratulations to your son.

My kid accepted RD on Candidates Choice Aplication. ACT 30, 3.9/4.0, lots of APs and athletic ECs, not recruited however.

Mathson got accepted today. Candidate's Choice Application - I think he uploaded it the weekend before Thanksgiving.

I applied and got accepted.

I did get the RPI medal.
I also had decent extra curriculars.

How much does being recruited for a sport help?

quote:

The fun's not over yet, just think..in 3 years you will all be doing this again when looking for jobs/co-ops/internships. The difference is, the job application process is 10 times more time consuming and difficult to get through. So be prepared...

Fear mongering is always fun... Having gone through the full-time job search this past semester at RPI, it's safe for me to say you've exagerated quite a bit. Depending on what you did for the college search it might not actually take more time, I know some people that visited 5-10 schools, many of which were at least a day's trip. Almost all first round interviews take place on campus or over the phone, which will take about an hour at most. As someone who had 6 second round interviews, only two of them were more than a day trip, an invitation to Redmond, WA and an Technology Leadership Program interview down in FL. As for difficulty it really depends how you define that, if you don't have any people skills then you're right that you're much better off with college apps, which focus mostly on tests and essays.

However, companies are loving RPI right now. There are a ton of fantastic companies coming to RPI, and students this year have had a ton of success with very high paying jobs at very very good companies.

Best I can tell you after discussing this with lots of coaches is about 10 - 15% help depending upon the school. Meaning - if you need a 3.9 on a 4.0 scale you can have a GPA around 3.4 - 3.6 and with a coach's support have a >95% chance of acceptance. If the ACT mean is around 32, you can get by with a 27-28. Again, this requires coach's support with admissions. Scholarship or not. Some bigger D1 schools have even more flexibiltiy. It's often the recruited athletes and legacies that are the "bottom 25%" of the acceptance range. I know that's a general statement, but it can give you some guidance.

I got in!!

I haven't heard from RPI yet, but I did get a letter recently from the athletic office. It appears they showed some interest in me playing tennis for them (I have to fill out some form now). Does that mean I'm "recruited"? or does more have to happen for that?

They really can't recruit since they're D III, but they are probably going to try and get you interested in playing a sport for them. They can recruit for hockey.

BTW I got accepted November 27th or so, Materials Engineering. Medalist and right on RPI's average for SAT scores, strong course load, good gpa, and many EC's, particularly in the music program. My personal statement probably helped me because it incorporated engineering, drumming and their connection, and my recs were good. Good luck to you all.

Son got in.

Financial aid letter is worded: "We are in the process of calculating your merit award..."

Hope hope. Pray pray.

Weenie, my son got that same letter about a merit award. The letter then goes on to remind him to file a FAFSA if he needs need-based financial aid. Did you interpret that letter to mean they are assured some sort of merit award or is RPI waiting on need- based paperwork before they finish working out merit awards?

^ I had no idea how to interpret it. We were laughing at dinner tonight as we imagined getting a letter that said, "We calculated your merit award, and it's zero."

Who the heck knows?! We'll sit tight until April and see how things turn out then. We'll file FAFSA because we have two in school, but last time we did it our EFC was $65,000. Ha. That was just pitiful.

I think the merit awards will come out well before April, jdasmom. I would interperet the letter to mean merit awards are on the way since I'm pretty sure eveyone who applies early gets the best of the awards.

OMG I GOT IN, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, WOW!!! I found out on my 18th birthday which is today!!!! They only received my stuff on December 8th, they must have really liked me!

DD has been accepted. All her paperwork was in as of Dec. 8th and her notice was posted online today.

Basic Stats: 790M, 690V, 710W, 98w GPA, 2/450 rank. Involved in chorus and theatre, mock trail and academic decathalon, Colorguard.

Anybody know how/when they award scholarships?

Palermo - how's your son doing at RPI? Are the students competitive with each other or cooperative.

YESSSSSSSSS! I just got in ED! It's amazing. If I can do it anyone can. My stats were not so great at all: 630 Math, 670 CR, and 650 writing. My EC's were so-so, but I'm pretty sure it's my essay that got me in! Also I'm in the top 30-40% of my class. If I got in with those scores, I'm sure anyone else can too. Good luck to all!
