To all who applied to Smith this year - what was the admission decision, and would you mind sharing your GPA/test scores/anything else that might have factored in?

I applied with a 4.34 weighted GPA. I was fifth in my class. My scores were okay. I had a 2010 SAT and a 30 ACT.

I was accepted early, but applied for Regular Decision. In February I was surprised by a letter of acceptance to Smith, signed with a little message by the Dean of Admission herself. I was so surprised–one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

I know that all essays are different and all, but what did you write about in your essay? And what were your extra curriculars?

I’ve got probably like a 3.8-9 GPA unweighted, and higher than 4 weighted. Testwise, I got a 2040 superscored on the SAT - a 2020 highest sitting.

I have really strong ECs - I am interning at HuffPost Live, and am published on HuffPost, I’m going to be leading a Feminist Majority Foundation club in my school, I’ve taken piano for 7 years, etc.

I’ve visited NYU once, and will visit again this summer.

However, I do have a…thing. I was out of school during sophomore year - not my fault - due to really intense family issues. I was NOT ALLOWED to do school, read, write, etc. I know it’s weird…strange situation. However, I did online school (ugh it was awful) and got As, and picked myself up very strongly in 11th grade after returning to school midyear. Even when I was not allowed to read or write, I hid notebooks and pens and made up my own language so I could. It’s a really strange situation and was not my fault, and I’m worried about what colleges will think…

What do you think?

Marinozai-- ^^^ Interview. Request a staff member, not a student.

David

First, correction - I said I visited NYU - I had copied the grades/extracurriculars part of that post from an NYU board - sorry! I haven’t visited Smith, but will visit in August.

Any advice/tips/stuff I should know regarding the interview? - and I will definitely try to request a staff, if possible - thanks David.

I did an interview at smith, but with a student. This would be the perfect time to mention your situation during your sophomore year. Just be yourself, dress nicely, and ask questions. I planned some questions to ask before and I think it helped a lot.

Interview reports don’t usually mention a lot of details, so unless you get it with a staff member, you should probably mention about your sophomore year somewhere in the Common App or have your counselor talk about it. Or you could write your essay about that.

I think you’ll be fine, Smith does a great job at reviewing applications holistically.

Hi!

I got waitlisted at Smith this year, and I had a GPA of 91 and a 2330 SAT.

I had a 4.5 gpa and 30 act score. I did an interview on campus. I was accepted. Hope this helped.

@violeta22 What was your unweighted GPA, if you don’t mind my asking? And how was the interview? I mean, obviously it went well, but do you have any tips for me, or questions you remember them asking?

My unweighted gpa was a 4.0. The interview went well it was a relaxed atmosphere. I asked questions about internships and my particular areas of interest.

I didnt send scores or have a high gpa. I got in.
I had an interview.

What were your extracurricular activities and what do you think contributed to your acceptance?

Hi Marinozai! I was recently admitted to Smith this year. So basically I had a 3.6 GPA UW and a 1930 SAT score, which I chose to send. I also didn’t do an interview. In terms of ECs I really didn’t do much—I was an editor on the school newspaper for three years, interned at a company, played volleyball freshman year…I think what really made the difference was my essay. It was about my pretty unusual reasoning for why I wanted to go to a LAC. Although this year was apparently the “most selective class” in Smith’s history, I don’t necessarily think you need to have extraordinarily high test scores or grades to get in. At the end of the day gaining admission to a school is super unpredictable; for example I totally thought I would get into Bryn Mawr, but I was unsure about Smith. Then April rolls around and a funny thing happens—I got rejected from BMC, but not Smith!

Hope this helps!

@gsenior Thanks for sharing, and congratulations on Smith! (I’m actually also looking at Bryn Mawr.) What were your unusual reasons for wanting to attend a liberal arts college?

Hi, my D applied to Smith twice – as a first year, then as a transfer, and was accepted both times. She had an unweighted high school GPA of 3.6 and an SAT superscore of 2060. When she applied for transfer, she had a 3.65 from her first college. Her ECs were Senior Ed of HS literary and art magazine, Pres of Drama Society, and VP of GSA. She had a great on-campus interview with an admissions staff member, and her Common App essay (for first year admission) received a lot of positive feedback from many of the schools she applied to.

She is now a Smithie, very happy they accepted her a second time.

That is great to hear - I have a 3.87 GPA and a 2040 superscore. I’m interviewing in a few weeks. How did her interview go? And what did she write about in her common app essay?

@Marinozai – her interview went really well, I could hear the laughter as I sat reading in the admissions office waiting room. I think there was a lot of discussion about books she’d read. Her common app essay was about presenting her portfolio to an adjudicator from the state art teachers association. (She only let me read it once, after she submitted her Common App.) I think it’s less what you write about than about what your essay reveals about your character, your passions, your aspirations. She chose a single experience – one that was significant to her for reasons beyond visual art – and used it as a jumping-off point. Good luck!

I had a 3.8UW/4.3W and SAT superscore 2150. I just did a lot of HS ecs that interested me–mostly reading/writing sort of things. I also got into Mount Holyoke and Bryn Mawr with merit scholarships.

I will be applying to Smith RD this year, when did everyone hear back?
