acceptances/stats

Hello, I went through this process two years with my daughter to get into a BFA program for musical theatre: very low acceptance rates/audition process. Now my son wants to go to film school and will be attending a program this summer. He is a rising senior. I knew ALOT more about musical theatre than I do about film. Would anyone mind posting gpa/sat/act/ portfolio/experience along with where you applied/accepted/rejected and final decisions? This was SO helpful on the musical theatre forums. It just was a gauge at comparing. Thank you.

Hi SRluvsMT! I think that people are a little reluctant to post the exact info you’ve asked for. At least in my case, the details “belong to” my S and I would not feel right making all that public. In his case though, he was applying to a school which is not usually on the radar for film school students. The specific program he was applying to, however, was fairly competitive (approx 25% acceptance rate), including a huge scholarship. He did not apply to the usual “name” schools, except for USC, and withdrew that application when he was accepted (early) where he attended.

That said, I can generalize: he was at the very top of stats (though not perfect). The main thing that came across in his interview was his total commitment to making films. At one point, we kinda guessed that he was “in” when the school went into recruitment mode.

I liked his (video) portfolio he had to submit. He narrated it, and included some films and animations he did when he was 9 years old and showed his progression to his then-latest films and animations. The full films were included on the DVD as “bonus material.”

Welcome to the world of film-school-parent.

A warm welcome, SRluvsMT!
You can find that info by using the list of film schools (see Important threads at top of this forum) and going to those college forums. Read through the various Decision and Acceptance threads for the schools your son may be interested in. Majors are typically noted, so you can see how the film kids fared at USC, FSU, LMU, wherever.
The portfolios matter a lot, of course. There are a few places where a small sampling might be found, but it may make sense for DS to narrow the list of schools, first, after some initial research.

Hi!

I went through a similar journey. Older D is graduating NYU with a BM musical theatre (Steinhardt). Younger D is going into NYU for a BFA studio art.

If NYU is one of your son’s options, I would be happy to answer any specific questions.

In general, for the talent-based programs in Steinhardt and Tisch, an audition or portfolio is 50% of the criteria for acceptance.

Younger D was accepted with a 2000 SAT (610-M, 720-V, 670-W) and a 29 ACT (35 English). Her weighted GPA was 90.01. Honors and 5 AP’s. Lots of leadership. Strong art/ musical theatre background. Excellent essays and recommendations. I think she was seen as stong in English/verbal skills and not so much in math/ science. (Dropped pre-calc in junior year–although taking College Algebra this year.)

Fine arts is a different path than film, but good luck. At times, I wished she was auditioning for MT.
