Acceptances to class of 2011 rolling in~~~

Congrats to BlueDevilMike on that fancy call from Toby Stock. Break out the BUBBLY. Way nice for you. Great news and again, congratulations.

Your invisible message goes here.

Who the hell's Toby Stock?

Anyway congratulations.

Assistant Dean-Harvard Law School. Got it.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Might I somehow be able to contact bluedevilmike?

Congrats to you too on that conversation w/ T. Stock. Twofer on CC thus far for class of 2011.

Nice news guys. Beantown awaits you both.

BDM & Badatcomingupwithusername

GREAT NEWS!!!

Congrats to both of you on your recent Toby Stock calls. Who knows you may end up becoming real life bff's in Harvard's class of 2011.

Happy Thanksgiving

ps

hey Haz,

hope that all is going well for you as a 1L

S

Does a call mean that you were accepted or that you have a good chance of acceptance?

Regardless, that's awesome news. BDM is a baller when it comes to these things!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The first call means you have a very good chance (near 100% that early). The second call which BDM got, in which the Dean of Admissions actually told him he was accepted, was an even stronger clue.

BTW, futurenyustudent's "Got it" merely means he figured out who Toby Stock is, not that he got a call.

That must have been the best thanksgiving gift ever. I would love to get into Harvard Law on thanksgiving.

Anyway congrats on the acceptances!!! Champagne's on me!!!

when did BDM switch from medicine to law?

congrats to both!

Thanks to all for the well-wishes. I know it's a weird path, but fortunately all schools involved have thus far been very understanding.

Best of luck to all others, wherever they may be: looking for jobs, taking the LSAT, or whatever else may come up.

I hope you don't go too far into the red. :)

Well at BigLaw paying $195k straight out of law school, i dont think it matters that much. And Harvard Law has more money than God. Harvard Law LENDS money to God.

1.) Even at $160,000 a year, going all-loans for all-expenses would be nearly $420,000 worth of debt. That would take a LONG time to pay off. Fortunately, that's not the case. Don't be so cavalier about debt.

2.) As is pretty clearly stated, I'm not going into BigLaw.

Hey congrats to you two - that's great.

First years making $195K? Do you know something the rest of us don't?

Sullivan & Cromwell is paying $160k plus $35k bonus this year. And because of how the market works, other firms will follow suit.

I see how you got $195 - never count a bonus before it hatches.

The way these bonuses work, though, at these law firms is that it's lockstep; if you don't get fired (which you rarely ever do), you'll get the bonus. Sherman & Sterling fired a bunch of associates in 01-02 and they're still suffering for it.

I don't want to hijack this celebration thread, but I have been in this business long enough to see it all - including cancelled or significantly reduced bonuses if paying them threatens payments to the partners. They are still discretionary. I have also seen several rounds or mass layoffs at even the largest firms so getting fired - I mean layed off - is not out of the question. My advice is to never spend the bonus or even plan on how to spend it until it is in the bank.
