Accepted 2012

Thanks all. Daughter got a large white envelope from Fordham today. The post mark is 12/13 and there is nothing on the outside. Sounds like it's probably good news!

rainoffire- thanks for the heads up while i know pre-med will be very challenging (both of my parents are doctors) to be honest I don't know much about the program at Fordham. Are you in pre-med yourself? I understand about the core but could you expand on the workload with taking 20 credits(Thats about five classes correct?) and the whole pre-med scene in general. I understand you are given an advisor. I do plan on being a science major so that should help in canceling out some of those pre-med classes. Is there a lot of work or is it just very hard? -Thanks

still no letter!
i hope mine's in the next batch..

ACCEPTED!!!
North NJ
=] hispanic 3.93 GPA
$6000 metro grant

Accepted! This is my D's first acceptance and it is really thrilling! She received the Dean's Scholarship as well which is great news for her parents :)
Stats are 3.7 uw and 4.2 w GPA, ACT 31 SAT 2000

She has been quite "chill " about the entire college application process but is pretty happy right now.

I must say that posters like Swansong, rainoffire, catfishin, etc have had such encouraging and wonderful words about Fordham it's hard not to get excited about what lies ahead for my D and others accepted. What a great day!

If the letter had nothing about scholarship, does that mean I got no merit aid?

It looks like if you were getting scholarship monies you would have been notified along with your acceptance. Below is from the FAQ section...

Fordham University offers merit scholarships in three major categories for incoming freshmen: Presidential, Deans, and National Semifinalist. The following are minimum criteria to be considered for scholarship. Meeting these criteria does not guarantee a scholarship offer.

There are no separate forms for scholarship.

Scholarships are generally awarded to the top 8% of the of the admitted class.

Scholarship recipients typically have an A/A- average, minimum 1350 SAT with an even split between the critical reading and math sections, with typically above a 2000 including the New SAT Writing section, rank within the top 10% of the graduating class, and have strong extracurricular involvement.

Deans scholarships are worth minimally $10,000, on an annual basis, which may increase if a student demonstrates financial need.

There are only 20 Presidential scholarships awarded each year. Presidential scholars typically have a strong A/A- average, rank within the top 1-2% of the graduating class (and are often #1 or #2), score above 1450 on the SAT, with typically above a 2200 including the New SAT Writing section, and have very strong extracurricular involvement and demonstration of leadership ability. Presidential scholarships are worth full tuition and room.

Scholarships are also available for students who are National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic semifinalists or finalists and rank within the top 10% of the graduating class. National Semifinalist scholarships are for full tuition.

mdmets-
I'm not in pre-med but I've watched a few friends trudge through it. They took around 18-21 credits per semester (which is, yes, 5 classes.. around 6 if you include labs). When you first start out as a freshman, during your first semester, you'll take either Comp and Rhetoric (english) or close reading and critical writing (english).. i recommend you start with comp and rhetoric your first semester and take close reading second semester; close reading is a harder course. Then you will take gen chem 1, bio 1, and most likely calc 1. After that, you might take theology or any other class that fulfills a core requirement. It's a very full schedule and pretty overwhelming for an incoming freshman but if you have tons of drive and passion for math and science you'll probably come out on top.

Also, there is a foreign language requirement for sci. majors but unlike the 5-semester requirement for other majors, there is only a 2-semester requirement for sci. majors. You can take these two semesters any time before graduation. I would recommend that you wait until after fresh yr. to complete these b/c fresh. yr will be hard enough as it is.

My roommate is a chem. major and works all the time. He's very driven though and does well.

My daughter made a quick swing by the house before her music lesson to open envelopes. Accepted at Fordham Rose Hill with a very kind letter of congratulations and a Dean's Scholarship for $10,000. Nice!

Now she has to visit Fordham at some point when school is in session. We visited the summer before last. The campus was beautiful, but it was so quiet; she couldn't really get a feel for it. And I'm sure she will talk on line to people, friends of friends, who go there. Plus, she needs to learn more about the course offerings at Fordham in her planned major. This is all very exciting.

so they expect me to pay 50,000 or whatever it will be next year

rainoffire- thanks for the insight...i dont mean to pester you with questions but an actual student is the best source for what things are really like...I am in calc 1 right now and i speak spanish fluently is there anyway i can test out of those?...i go to prep school so im pretty used to huge workloads...does your roomate still get his playtime when hes free or is he really just too busy?

My D got her letter on Friday - A great early Christmas Present.

FYI - Her stats -
I won't list everything - but the basic stats are that she has a 4.6 weighted (3.8 non weighted) with 1210 SAT (plus a 740 in the essay portion that they don't count), class rank is #20, all the AP classes she could take (her school doesn't offer many). All the rest of the resume is pretty strong - well rounded, etc.

Good Luck to all others - hope good news is on the way.

accepted today (!!) to college of business administration
90 GPA, 2210 SAT (1410 cr/math)
westchester, ny

have to decide whether its worth it to apply to NYU or to just stick with Fordham...

accepted
2120
3.85
male; boston
intended major: philosophy and visual art

congrats to everyone, also my first acceptance.

also came in a manilla-envelope SIZED (NOT a manilla envelope, it was white), with a red folder inside.

Congrats to all who got notice of acceptance today! Welcome to the Fordham Family! I STRONGLY encourage you to visit at your earliest convenience, after Christmas break! For those with D's you can ask and see if people will let you stay in the dorm for the weekend and get a taste.....its delightful! But if not, then come in April with the New Student Orientation weekend....which is a blast. Last year 1,600 showed up in a HORRIBLE NorEaster......cancelled flights and all.....and it STILL sold us. Its a great place to go to college.

If you did not get a scholarship, then apply for financial aid and do that IMMEDIATELY. Financial Aid awards will come out in the early spring and you can compare offers from various schools. But I have to tell you....its worth every penny at Fordham. And hint, hint...Fordham grads get GOOD HIGH PAYING JOBS! Fact, Jack!

Being accepted is a wonderful feeling that you will remember for the rest of your life! I am glad it was Fordham. Welcome to the Fordham Family!

We hope to see you in April.

I was accepted to the college of business administration... with no scholarship.

I had a 1300 or 1930 SAT and was really hoping for some merit aid. I would nearly definitely be going here if I got SOME money.

I had a 95 GPA, am taking and have taken numerous APs and had great ECs. If I only had 50 more points on my SAT....

I just think it's a bit ridiculous that 50 points on the SAT is the difference between saving $40,000 or not...

and Rebecca.....the CBA is awesome. My D's best friend from Philadelphia is in CBA and LOVES IT! CBA kids matriculate and live with Rose Hill-Fordham College kids....and take the same core requirements. Fordham and NYU are of course both in New York, but NYU is in Manhattan and Fordham in the Bronx. NYU is a big school and very prestigious...but its definitely an urban campus. Fordham is a gorgeous campus of 90 acres or so....in the Bronx....lush green lawns, beautiful trees, gothic buildings, HUGE library and next to the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens. The Metro North stops literally right at the Fordham gates on Fordham Road! Its a 15 minute clean and safe ride to Grand Central! How cool is THAT? Fordham kids are really, really tight.

So while I will never discourage anyone from applying to any college, I will tell you that Fordham is an awesome place a LOT of fun. But come prepared to work hard!

Free: Scholarships are just that way....it happens EVERYWHERE....I could tell you similar stories at Duke! Believe me! The process of deciding who gets a scholarship and who doesnt is complex. Dont make a judgement yet. Apply for financial aid immediately and wait until you hear from them. They give out a LOT of grant money.....which is the same essentially as a scholarship...but not quite as prestigious.....you dont get a Scholarship Certificate. But the grant is the same at the bottom line come tuition time......and they are annually renewable normally. Yes, its really nice to get that scholarship. But what is more important is that you go to a college where you will be happy and THRIVE and get a GREAT job when you graduate.

Be thankful you got in. Fordham is becoming extremely competitive and selective. The wait list last year was HUGE! And not many got in. Dont assume that Admissions is disrespecting your obvious academic accomplishments. They are not. Its a highly competitive process.

Congratulations on being accepted and welcome to the Fordham Family! Apply for financial aid if you need it and see what happens.

We had to call because something in my acceptance pkg was confusing and they said they will be handing out more merit aid in coming months. Oh is anyone on this board named Whelan from NY? lol!!! PM me I have something important to tell you.
