accepted as transfer...not sure I wanna go anymore! help?

Hey everyone. I applied to transfer as an upcoming sophmore this year and I got accepted to NYU :) but not my dream school :( Before I found out about that rejection I had pretty much ruled out NYU based on the aid package alone and given it no more thought. But now I have a choice between staying at Lehigh (I'm not miserable here but it's far from being a dream school. ever) or paying way over $20,000 to go to a school I'm not really sure about.

The problem is, the more I hear from other people (transfers to NYU, ppl with friends there, many websites etc.) the less I seem to like it. I'm not keen on the campus; I think it would be harder to make close friends and be social without spending a ton of money around the area. There seems to be a very high % of girls for a co-ed school...and so on.

I don't wanna list the reasons I'm not sure about it, I don't want to offend anyone at all. But I would love to hear from previous transfers, alumni, current students...anyone! Anything really great and really bad. I need to be sure I want to spend over $20k a year to go there. Otherwise I'll stay at Lehigh, do well and graduate. Thanks so much! :)

Do any transfers have anything at all to say?

I am debating as well.

I came to weighing is it worth to take loan for 80k to get a little better paying job.

As my professor put it, If i graduate with good grades from any school, i probably would start my job at about 45k a year.

NYU i hear u can start at about 55k with good grades and networking.

Now the difference is about 10 k. But the difference in loan is 60k.

Is it worth it? I dunno. I am still debating.

just putting in my thoughts.

Please give us advice! ;)

Although the loans worry me, that's not my main concern. I have a supportive sister for that. Anything could happen between now and getting a job, I'm more concerned with what I can get out of college, and how I'll feel about it in 10 years time. For me, it's more about: do I want to go to NYU enough? At the moment, I'm still erring on the side of no. :(

excuse my ignorance, but is lehigh a good college? (never heard of it.

as far as your future, i think NYU will hold more weight on ur pride and education. It's better known, and it is improving is standard every year.

What are you going to major in?

P.S. you have a very nice sister! but when it comes down to real deal, i dunno if ur sister will really pay your 20k a year :P just my 2 cents

I'm going to give my 2 cents here and answer some of the above..

As a response, Lehigh is a very good school. Pretty small private school in Bethlehem, PA, very strong programs in business in engineering.

Ok well nyu doesn't have engineering so im guessing your either coming for business or liberal arts. In my opinion, if your coming for business go to nyu, if its anything else, stay at lehigh.

I'm transferring to stern in the fall as a sopohmore. The difference between a university of delaware business degree and a stern business degree (my case) is huge. Also, I've realized that going to college in the city is the right thing for me. If the life/experience/enviornment is big for you and you want to be part of the city scene, I'd say nyu is worth it. I'm about to take out $70k in loans, but i know its going to be worth it.

I was in a situation similar to yours (choosing between Berkeley at $20,000 a year and NYU at $40,000) and I chose Berkeley. I dont know if Lehigh and Berkeley are comparable, but the thing that made me choose Berkeley was the huge difference in loans. My parents were looking at $100,000 in loans and I wouldve had alot too. I couldnt burden them (and myself) like that so I choe to go to Berkeley. I also didnt LOVE the no-campus thing at NYU and I felt like the majors were pretty bland. Im an American Studies major at Berkeley and I wouldve had to go to generic History at NYU. I say just stay at Lehigh unless youre miserable and anything would be better. Loans suck.

Yeh, I'm tending to agree with you guys. My sister would certainly pay the majority of those loans but like you easymack I don't want that hanging over either of us (even though she thinks NYU is a better school). I would go to NYU for liberal arts. Lehigh is good for engineering and business so CAS is really put on the backburner. However, there are some teachers I like and I could do fine here. I guess I'm gonna have to stick Lehigh out, hopefully graduate earlier, then move to the city, which I know I'll do. I just wish I had found a college I'd love instead of spending my 20's trying to rush through college! So unless I suddenly fall in love with NYU (I may be visiting again next week) I'll be at Lehigh next fall. :(?

do whatever you are happy with,

even if it's taking 60k in loans.

I hear most nyu students will have about 100k in loans by the time they graduate.

I transferred to NYU but it was my dream school so I'm a little biased. I will say that if you don't like the campus or the idea of NYU being integrated into the city then don't come. It will only be dissapointing. That said, I honestly can't picture myself being anywhere else. Making friends is not difficult and you don't have to go out and spend $100 a night. There are so many programs and events for free that RA's or NYU sets up that are awesome that you can take part in. Remember, all transfers and all freshmen are in the same boat as you are. If you put yourself out there and try to adjust you'll find NYU to be the best school out there. I know I do.

just wondering, askaboutnyu, where did you transfer from and what are your stats? I'm awaiting a transfer decision this year.

I transferred from UCI. My stats don't really matter cause I got recruited to play volleyball at NYU so I was going to get in regardless. So you know I had a 3.25 at UCI as a bio major/pre-med

askaboutNYU: Are you a sophmore now? What would you say the average girl/guy is like? I know that's a hard question but if someone asked me what the average Lehigh student was like I'd say: middle to upper class, in the Greek system, loves to drink, has a fast car, studies an average amount (not too little not too much), not too friendly, athletic, in business or engineering, apathetic. I think that's about it. And please could you tell me about your transfer experience (as much as possible!). Thank you so much.

askaboutnyu: what dorm did they put you in and was it hard to meet people there? i spoke to housing and apparantly they are putting some transfers with freshmen this year, dont know if thats good or bad

johnb1234, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I didn't realize that, I'm old enough already without being housed with 17-18 year olds (nothing wrong with them, but that's my sister's age! :) )

yo blueangel as we're both posting here late night hit me up on aim: dogg31628

I transferred to NYU as a junior. My favorite thing about NYU is that I honestly can't describe the "average" person here. There are a lot of rich kids but the majority of kids either get great financial aid or are taking loans out to finance their education. I go to school with some of the smartest and most talented kids in the nation and I wouldn't even attempt to categorize them. Money is without a doubt not a factor in making friends here. New York is expensive but everyone can find their nitch.
I got placed in the Cliff St. dorm as a trasnfer. Cliff st last year and I believe this year was primarily all tranfers. I'll be an RA next year and I know for a fact that no transfers will be placed with Freshmen. Last year they did this at U-Hall but only because NYU admitted to many people and they ran out of room. Most transfers are placed by the seaport and I love it. Their is a subway right by my apartment and I take that or the bus to campus. You can walk it in about 20-25 minutes but the subway is easy. My apartment is AMAZING! It's huge and has more closet space than I could possibly need. More importantly, having a building that was all transfers was awesome because I got to know everyone easily as eveyrone was in the same boat. Anyways hope this helped and good luck in your decisions.

So is it fair to say that since cliff st/water st are far from campus but are mostly sophomores and transfers there is a sense of community there with everyone?

askaboutNYU, that was soooo helpful. And you were so positive my mind is almost considering NYU now. :) Would it be ok to ask you more questions as I think of them, specifically in the next month? Also, are you still doing bio/pre-med and do you know anyone doing Hist/Ancient Hist/English? Thanks!

give us ur aim sn :)
