Accepted at Groton

NEprepgoer - again, thanks a lot, your insight really helps me. And my next question is probably redundant, but I’ll ask anyway. Is there a lot of diversity there, whether it be lost of different nationalities or just lots of very different mentalities? I’m asking because in my current school, the mentality in the girls is kind of like, “I need to be the prettiest, have the most money, and get the most guys,” which seems to be upper-class Colombian culture, and that’s fine, but I want to know if the Groton mentality is one I’d fit in with.

icy9ff8 - that’s what my Dad says about Andover, and my sister, who goes to St. Mark’s, agrees that I’d probably fit into Andover better than one of the St. Grottlesex schools. But I want to know my options first, and besides I still don’t know if I’ve been accepted.

Tell your friend’s mom thanks. I thought the personal letter was cool. Actually, all the people I met were very sincere. How would you contrast Groton to SPS ?

Sofi- Diversity isn’t as strong as some school, but Groton is very small. I also know that it is one of the main things the school has been focusing on lately so in years to come things will change. There are of course lots of different mentalities… People, I think, find themselves at Groton and become who ever they want to be. It’s interesting to see how people who are totally different come together to be best friends

wyvern- Comparing Groton to SPS is hard because they really are different. The academics are pretty equal so it all just depends on community and school size etc. SPS it about 2 times as big as Groton, the campus is more spread out, whereas Groton is focused around the cirlce. SPS is much more outdoorsy than Groton, not to say that there aren’t people that love the Great Outdoors at Groton =] It’s hard to compare the two. It all just comes down to the feeling you get at each school. For me I know right away that I loved Groton, it was easy after revisit day to say that that was the school I wanted to attend.
Oh and Yes, everyone is very sincere at Groton. It’s a very open and kind community!

I was accepted at Groton too! I’ve heard that students aren’t happy there.
Is that true?

ps. The personal letter was nice, i even received at poster!

It’s a great school! You should totally go. I didn’t appply but I wish I would’ve. Its academics are world renowned like others mentioned and it’s a small school. It’s near perfect. lol

There’s no school that is “perfect” for everyone. I know it’s easy to get carried away by a school’s name; I’ve done it myself (especially after being on cc for too long–I’ve been visiting the site for three years–two years before I joined). Groton is a wonderful school for the right students–it IS small, insular, structured for younger students, and community-oriented; students do not tend to go abroad for their junior year because it’s too disruptive to leave Groton. This is perfect for the student who is looking for this and it was one of my S’s top choice schools. It was not a good fit for my D (who goes to Exeter and has loved it)–my S did not even apply to Exeter. The importance of fit cannot be overstated. The best school is the one where YOU will be the happiest. Happy students have friends, do better in school, enjoy the activities, develop into the people they are meant to be–all the things that not so incidentially, colleges are looking for. Sofi’s background and questions give me pause–I would not feel comfortable saying Groton is undoubtedly the right school for her. She might be happier at one of the bigger schools. Undoubtedly she will enrich Groton, but will Groton enrich her? She is asking the right questions; hopefully she will be able to do the revisits and see what each campus feels like to her.

Quenn - unfortunately I won’t be able to revisit Groton since I live in Colombia, but I agree with everything you said.

NEprepgoer - Thanks for all your insight, you were really helpful. Groton seems like a great school, and having the opinion of an “insider” was really good.

However, I’ve been thinking about it a lot, I’ve asked the opinion of many people, teachers and students at Groton as well as my friends and family, and I think I’ve decided on Andover. Groton seems like a wonderful school, but I don’t think it’s the one that suits me best. Thank you all for your insight, though.
