Accepted! ...but for spring?

The acceptances for Maryland are online, at least for me. I was accepted, but for the Spring '09 semester. What does this really mean, why do they push some people back?

It means that you were high enough to be accepted!

They do this because they don't have enough room for everyone that they offer acceptance for, but know statistically how many slots will open for January due to attrition and transfers.

Go to freshman connector thread, there are a lot of people who can help you understand. Spring 09 also went out in ED, so there are people who have been further down the road and can help

Congrats!

The difficulty of getting accepted is increasing year by year. My friend last year got in for Spring '09 (Freshmen Connection) and he had a 1460 SAT and 4.8 W GPA from a well respected high school where he was enrolled in the IB program.

Freshmen Connection can take courses in fall but have to live in The View apartments, which is most better than dorms, LOL. Also, the classes are smaller because they're geared towards helping the students adjust to college life, academically and socially. In reality, I think it's better than getting accepted for Fall just because of the perks (smaller classes, better accomodations).

My D was accepted for spring 09 also. I am curious, does anyone know if MD has a waitlist or do they only do spring admit or rejection?

They scrapped the waitlist a year or two ago--now it's only Fall, Spring, or reject.

Thanks, somebodynew.
Can anyone speak to the Freshman Connection program? Our main concern is whether or not there will be housing for our daughter after the fall. MD doesn't guarantee on campus housing for spring admit students. She could deal with the commute from home (we live in Northern Virginia) for the fall, but really wants to live on campus after that. Do most of the spring admit students get on campus housing or are you pretty much on your own for housing if you don't start in the fall?

Most, if not all, spring admits that I knew (and met over winter orientation or who did FC) got on campus for the fall.

That's great news! Do you mean they got on the fall before spring admit as Freshman Connection students, or the fall after they started as fully admitted students?
Hope that makes sense.

I mistyped. Freshman Connection students do not live on campus for the fall semester; housing starts after they are fully admitted students in the Spring.

Also, you can't take all of the courses offered to entering fall freshman.
Personally, unless you want to go badly to MD, starting in the fall is a big deal, along with the excitement of beginning with everybody you know. In January, moving in the cold weather, trying to break clicks does not appeal that much.
Good luck either way

Thanks for the clarification. It will be a tough call for her. She really wants to study journalism and of all the schools she has been accepted to, Maryland has the best program. She is planning on attending the spring admit day on April 11th. Does anyone know whether MD ever changes status from spring admit to fall? My D has a classmate who has been accepted to MD for the fall but is going to go to UVA. He told her to take his spot! I am probably just grasping at straws...

VATVMOM...Also was accepted for spring '09...probably goign to attend and in the freshman connection program so i can stay on course as a '12 graduate. Spring '09 is given to those students deemed good enough for the University of Maryland but applied into LEP (limited enrollment programs) majors. These would include among others the journalism school and the business school. I applied into the BSchool (LEP), which i did not make, for this reason. These programs at maryland have ridiculous standards for acceptence. So as a result, students like your daughter and me are given the ultimatum, spring '09. You said she wanted to do journalism, I assume she applied into the Philip Merrill College of Journalism (LEP), again, ridiculous standards. Maryland can't give us fall '08 admittance because we didn't apply there and would basically be taking spots away from kids who definitely wanted to be in Letters and Sciences college. One question for you...you said she wanted to do the journalism and maryland is the best...but if she was accepted spring '09, was it into the journalism school or is she intendign to apply as an internal transfer? As for your other question, I actually sent an email to UM and asked that question...do they pluck kids from spring '09 to fill fall '08 spots. Her answer was that they don't. Who knows though. Once spring '09 rolls around, on campus housing is guaranteed though, so that's cool. For BRUINSJEW...you said that Freshman Connection (FC) had to live in off campus housing..the views apartments you said. I read that on campus housing is not offered (fall '08) and nothing was said that FC students had to live in the view apartments or maryland helped set this up. Any info on that for us??

amyank489---are you sure that people who don't get accepted into a LEP major are put into spring? Cause i thought you would be considered for your 2nd major if you put one.

and are UMD students really clicky?

uhmm..im just a HS senior myself, don't know about student life there...i applied to a LEP and was put into spring myself...i listed an alternate major on my application but wasn't given it. Kinda glad that happened though bc looking back on it i think i don't want that at all. "If you select a limited enrollment program and do not meet its requirements or if available space is filled, you will be admitted to Letters and Sciences or your alternate major."...thats from marylands website. i didn't get my alternate major, thank god, but it's completely up to maryland i suppsoe.

i put down undecided which i doubt is a LEP :-) and got into spring. My stats were also pretty low for Maryland's standards.

honestly, i feel that if you got in for spring semester...try to look into another school...unless md is your dream school. You probably will get housing for spring semester...but your priority number for housing the next year will be low because you didn't get to live on campus two consecutive years. Having a low priority number will mean that you will have last choice in housing for the next year...and not to mention only 70 kids get on-campus housing their junior year and no will get housing their senior year =(

you def. get housing for freshman spring semester as a spring '09 admit
