My son was accepted yesterday. The letter states that while he is a strong candidate, they were unable to accept him into either his first OR second choice major. I understand that his first choice, sports communication, is very popular with not a lot of spots, but he didn’t get into his second choice either, which was communication. So, if he were going to attend, he would have to select a different major most likely something he is not as interested in. At this point, he is most likely going to go to another school where he was accepted into his choice major, but I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and how likely it would be to start in a different major and then possibly transfer majors after 1st year? It did take a little excitement out of being accepted I will have to say.
I cant’ say for sure, but you can possibly research in the web pages of each major about “transferring in”. We had to do that for my daughter when she wanted to change majors, as some are very specific on what you have to do and only have 1 window to transfer in.
For instance, to transfer into health sciences, you must apply for it by end of fall semester freshman year, and it is a competitive process (so you’d better have straight A’s fall freshman year lol). Later on she tried to transfer into international health and language and found that it is not allowed as it is a closed major. This info MAY be spelled out for you on the website, or you may want to try and call the department and ask them about it.
A little background and maybe some inspiration: she started in psych to be pre-med, and learned she no longer wanted to be pre-med pretty quick. She wanted to change into global health, but Clemson doesn’t have that. She tried to transfer to int’l health and it was closed. So instead, she stayed with psych, picked up a minor in anthropology and a minor in non-profit leadership, and also completed a certificate in global health and public health through the nursing departments. In short, she created her own global health major! She already had plans to get her MPH elsewhere, so she made the most of what they offer and ended up with a pretty cool list of achievements. She has been accepted to every MPH program she applied to including high ranked programs like Emory and BU!
@DAnnWi Did you try the hacks before you received the acceptance (with major change) in the mail? Did it work? Just wondering as my sons hasn’t changed and we haven’t received any mail.
