Hey guys i just got accepted in UCI and was put in Business Econ which was my alternative major. My first choice major was Business adminstration. I was wondering if it is very difficult to get into the business school and is it also difficut to reapply to that major? I thought i was capable to be accepted to that major because i had a 3.78 UW GPA with 8 APs and a 31 on my ACTS. I also have 1000+ hours in EC and am a resident of CA =

The major you applied for is capped:
“Regarding our capped majors: Business Administration, Business Information Management, and Nursing Science”

I found that when I stumbled upon the “change major” page in my admission center.
Maybe you can eventually change into business administration if you decide to go there, later on… but nonetheless
Congrats on your admission!

thanks lately, but does capped mean that i switch into that major once i attend UCI?

By definition “capped” would be that only certain amount of students get placed into that major, I’m not sure if you can switch into it later.

ya im really confused. i put business administration first, and undeclared for alternate…got into undeclared…can i switch? i think i would go to cal poly business anyways but i still want to know :/

Business Administration is REALLY difficult to get into. Your best bet would have been as an incoming freshman. I know there is one person on this forum who initially was not accepted into Bus Admin but instead her alternative major, but before she started at UCI they somehow informed her that she was in Bus Admin now. Look up previous threads, you’ll see how difficult it is to change your major.
There were only like 11 change of majors into Business Administration this year, so it is possible, but don’t go to UCI expecting to be able to change your major. They’re keeping the program small because it’s new, and that’s all they can handle at the moment.

Don’t get bummed out that you didn’t make it into the major, because tons of other people are just as qualified as well and probably didn’t get in.

Don’t worry about Business Administration and try to switch in, because you’re probably going to end up switching out anyways. My friend is a Business Administration major and she’s going to leave that major because apparently, you don’t really specialize in anything and there aren’t going to be as many opportunities when you graduate! I don’t know the specifics, but I’ll ask her for more info!

Thanks guys for the reply and michirondelle please ask her for the information because im curious to what she thinks about the program at uci =] thanks

If you plan on going to business school and getting an MBA don’t even worry about your undergraduate major. Focus more on internships than trying to get into the business administration program. Irvine has a ton of great businesses to work at.

I think the program differs depending on what you want to specialize in - Management, Marketing, or Accounting.
But what Sphinx says is true, if you plan on getting an MBA, don’t worry about your specific major. There’s even a 3-2 program where you finish obtain your MBA in 5 years of college that you can apply for, regardless of your major I believe.

yea i agree with above. I put bizecon as my first choice and bizadmin as my alternative cuz i feel like at least bizecon is a bit more specialized and i plan to pursue MBA

Yes you can apply to transfer as a change-of-major into the Business Admin major after you finish 90 units and the pre-reqs. Competition is high and the average GPA is around a 3.85~.

And to the poster who said “you cannot specialize in anything while in the major, and no opportunities after graduation”, that is just simply wrong.

As mentioned before, you can specialize in Marketing, Management, or Accounting. I can only speak for the accounting area as I’m minoring in accounting. 3 of the Big 4 of the public accounting firms recruit pretty heavily here, that goes for the mid-tiers as well.

As for the MBA, its not like the typical grad school where you apply right after getting you undergrad. This is because ‘most’ MBA students actually work 2-7 years after their bachelor, and then decide to get the MBA.

For the students who want to do business administration, there are also *minors in Accounting and Management in the same Merage School of Biz. These minors are easier to get into than the major. Keep in mind that the Accounting Minor is all you need if you want to go into accounting.
