The point was not NYC (although a NYC college's fees are lower than a SF one). Afterall, the UC schools are not all in SF, are they??? Go back and read from my first point on this subject. My point was that it is a shame that the UC's charge so much for dorm/board -- unlike other state schools. Then someone assumed that I'm some naive southerner (I'm a Californian living for a short time in AL). Some kept pointing to SF as if that is where all the UC schools are. UC schools are all across CA, just like the SUNY's are all across NY. Apples with Apples. The UC dorm/board fees across the state are much higher than the dorm/board fees across the state of NY.

Those huge fees the UC's charge for dorm and board are the way they raise their money since the state has to approve tuition increases. I am also amazed at the fees they charge. So many. Son is senior at UCSC, loves it there.

That's what I was thinking. UC's are using exaggerated dorm/board costs to cover what the fees don't. Unless things have changed, UC's don't charge "tuition" to "in-staters", they only charge "fees" (which because of their unusually high amount are mistaken as being "tuition"). OOS pay tuition plus (those high) fees.

Yes, yes.---------

here's a breakdown from our current bill for spring quarter 05:
Reg fee 245.00
undergrad campus fees $269.25
ed fee $1802.00
heatlth center fee(this is not the full insurance, just a tiny access plan to make it easier on son to go to the health center) $24.00
Voluntary fee: CALPIRG $5.00

No books, room or board are in this. The state heavily subsidizes the UC's.
