Accepted Class of 2018

Mommabear: Yes I am in state. I worry that maybe because so many kids from my school apply to Pitt and are accepted that they feel they have too many, thus making me less desirable because I am over represented. Last year alone 137 kids from school were accepted to Pitt.

Does anyone feel really antsy over the fact that these things are mailed to you? I feel like letters could be so easily overlooked or accidentally discarded and the college has no way to validate that you actually received it.

Not antsy on last point. Pitt will still have record whether they offered you scholly or not regardless of whether you ever get their letter. krose, my best guess is you’re not in line for chancellors at this time. I think you will get some type of award. My kid is from underrepresented school within the state and is still waiting too so the fact that your school has lots of applicants affecting your scholarship does not hold water with him who for now we will consider an applicant similar to u but with lower test scores. The things you 2 have in common are high test scores, in state, and small depts within the college of liberal arts.

Even a kid with 2400 SAT(single sitting) and 4/4 GPA didn’t get a scholarship letter ? It bothered me but could be a relax for other applicants. :)

Hey coleman4,

Sorry to hear that your daughter did not get into HC.

There might still be a chance that she might get into the Honors College. Frankly, I never believed that I would get into HC until I got a invite in the mail. Its interesting that she did not get in because of her class rank. On the website it says they prefer students in the top 5%, but I was in the top 10% and still got in.

Here are my stats if you’re interested:

Male/Indian(From India)
Tennessee Resident
UW GPA: 3.94 ; W GPA: 4.3
Accepted into Swanson College of Engineering
Plenty of AP/Honors Colleges
Average Extracurricular activities
Leader of two clubs
ACT: 33
Rank: 39 out of 402
Attended one of the top public schools in Tennessee
NHS
etc.

I still have not heard about scholarships from Pitt. Would you say its safe to assume that if they take this long (applied Oct 15; accepted Oct 28; HC invite Nov 11) that I’m probably not getting anything?

Thx. And good luck!

krose13 and nrajagopal123 - I don’t think just because it is Dec. 3 and you haven’t heard, that you are out for Chancellor’s or other merit. You both have UHC, high stats, lots of APs, great GPA. Noone can tell you what your chances are - just need to be patient and hope for the best. Yes, it does suck when others have heard - but it isn’t over until it is over. Seriously we dropped Pitt from consideration in Jan when we hadn’t heard for my ds (currently a jr at Pitt) and out of the blue, a nice $10K scholarship which made all the difference.

My D just came back from a tour of Pitt and a meeting at the UHC and was told scholarship notifications are still being rolled out and will be into February. So, hold on and be patient.

Interesting…my daughter applied with Pitt Prestige app, early October, and received an acceptance letter in early November, about a month in between… Didn’t receive a magnet…

Son received his acceptance to the DPT Graduate program today. He got the undergrad acceptance letter on 11/22 and the official UHC letter last week.

Amazing… he potentially has the next seven years of his life pre-arranged while most of his friends are still deciding on where to apply or working on their applications.

My D was accepted into the UPitt nursing school a few weeks ago, so excited for her! It is her number one choice. The letter had no mention of merit money but hopeful. She is OOS and it would be difficult to pay the full price.

Her stats:
SAT 2240 (M 720, CR 710)
GPA 3.70 - includes AP courses (attends the number one high school in her state)

Does anyone know if UPitt takes into consideration the fact that her high school is very competitive or is it strictly a numbers game?

@murphy1008- congrats! I do believe they look at how competitive the high school is that you attended, but if you are at a school that doesn’t offer many AP’s I don’t think they penalize either. With your daughter’s stats, I would guess she would get some $$$ but as you have probably figured out by posts on this forum, there’s no absolute formula.

@Fauster it is a wonderful feeling to know that your son is on a great path at a great school. My DS is in the Pharmacy program and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience for him academically or over all.

^ murphy1008 - what is your daughter’s class rank?

Not to beat a dead horse, not only my own daughter, but I’ve encountered a couple others as well that have similar stats (test scores and GPA) - but fall short on the class rank and therefore, have not been included in the scholarship consideration pool. Since your letter didn’t mention that you would be included in the scholarship consideration (neither did ours as well as another poster who left me a private message with similar stats), I’m wondering if you’re in the same boat as us.

We also come from a very competitive school so unfortunately, even with my daughter’s stats -ACT 34, SAT 1420- (CR and Math only), GPA 3.7 UW/ 4.5 W and rigorous course load (several APs and the rest Honors), she still falls out of the 5% or even 10% (she’s 13%), but from Pitt’s website, it appears they actually require 5% class rank.

From Pitt website: https://oafa.pitt.edu/learn-about-aid/academic-scholarships/

What are the requirements?
Criteria for scholarship consideration include SAT I/ACT results, overall grade point average, class rank (if applicable) and strength of curriculum. Activities outside of the classroom such as leadership positions, athletics, community service, etc. are reviewed but given secondary consideration.

In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:

 • Minimum SAT I score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only) or 33 ACT composite score
 • Overall ‘A’ average
 • Top 5% class rank (if applicable) while participating in challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
 • Record of excellence in various academic and nonacademic activities outside of the classroom

I was just accepted to the Swanson school of Engineering today. I applied early November! Just for comparison
ACT: 30 (33 M, 30 R, 30 E, 28 S)
GPA: 3.85 unweighted, 94.3 weighted
Total of 8 AP courses, and over 10 Honors classes throughout high school
White, female, Virginia

Welcome 14robin!!!

I’m a parent from last year’s admission cycle and just wanted to congratulate all the parents and kids on their admissions an wish everyone luck on their apps.

Pitt was one of the best campuses we visited and although my D chose another school, it was due to cost, we found Pitt to be a hidden treasure.

What the heck? I applied mid-October and still haven’t heard anything. On my Pitt Connect it says they have received everything and it’s said that for over a month. Should I email them or something?

@coleman 4^

My daughter falls within the top 15% of her class. I hope Pittsburgh takes a more organic approach when deciding who receives merit money. I suppose with large Universities it is harder to take that approach. It is my daughter’s top choice so I can only hope it works out!

Just became active on CC. I got accepted at the end of October and was actually invited to a recruitment dinner like thing for tonight in my area which am going too. I am kind of excited, but Pitt isn’t really my first choice. But I wouldn’t mind going there. :)

SAT: 2000 (M: 740 CR: 630 W:630)
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.75 weighted
Class Rank: 1/323
8 AP courses, all other classes were mostly honors.
Nigerian, MD, Female

@Muftogun Welcome to CC! We have two high schools in our school district and one valedictorian from 2012 and one from 2013 are attending Pitt, so you would be in great company!

My son applied to Pitt in October and received his acceptance and invitation to UHC a few weeks later (early November maybe?). Acceptance letter said that he would get merit information by March. Merit letter came in the mail today with full tuition and invite to apply for Chancellor’s. For those interested, here’s a brief summary of stats:

SAT: 1590 CR + M; 2360 (CR,M, W)
ACT: 35
GPA: W 5.1 UW 3.96
Rank: 2 of 350
NMSF
Several APs, college math beyond calc BC, internship in field related to his interests

Congrats to all who have been accepted and hang in there to those still waiting for decisions and scholarships!

Congratulations. My D is still waiting.
