I have either the option of going on the waitlist for the Swanson School of Engineering, or attending the school of arts and sciences with the intention to transfer. Since Pitt is my third choice school and will most likely be the one I will attend, I will probably not risk going on the waitlist unless I do not particularly like the campus when I visit. I will be visiting on Sunday and Monday for their tour of the campus. I was so surprised when I got in! Quite a ways a way from home but who doesn’t love independence see you all next fall, hopefully! Or perhaps on the World of Possibilities Tour ;D

I would also like to mention that you CAN get in to a prestigious school with a low GPA (although its better to get the good grades and leave the extracurricular activities for later) but its very very difficult (and there will be many rejections). I did tons of stuff other than studying, which as you can see, severely effected my GPA. So the classes where I got D’s, I retook both semesters and got A’s. Now in order to transfer to SSoE I have to take Chem, Calc, Physics, and Intro to Engineering. Studying> extracurricular activities. Just something to keep in mind.

Anyone intending to major in neuroscience here?

Congrats to all the admits!!!

@tippytap: that is my D’s intent, but Pitt might not be the uni. What do you have in mind?

@jkeil911 Well I’m an international applicant, and only applied to Pitt. Got in with an intended major for neuroscience, so if there’s a scholarship, I’m going there.

Which other schools did your daughter apply to? Curious to know.

admitted UMD, Tulane, Rochester, Lafayette.

@jkeil911 good choices, on the whole. Best of luck to her!

@jkeil911, you didn’t solicit my opinion but Rochester and Tulane are by far the better neuro places on that list. Lafayette’s program is weak with little neuro-specific course content and really only two labs publishing with any regularity (out of a paltry total of four). MD-CP doesn’t have an undergrad neuro-specific program at all and its graduate program is located in Baltimore, not College Park.

@jkeill911, has ur daughter settled on a school yet? Mine(son) is going to Temple. Take care everyone.

congratulations, ctl, on Temple. It’s going to be a great experience for your S. Philadelphia is a great, sprawling aurochs of a city and should prepare him well for any big city he might live in in the future. Temple is a good school with a great deal to offer students like your S. Make sure you give your S the talk about how to move vigilantly about the city streets of North Philly as if he grew up there. My mother-in-law did 6 years at Temple without any problems, and she was in her late 60s and early 70s. It’s all about presenting yourself as a harder target. My D is still deciding btw pitt and maryland.

@tippytap: thank you. and best of luck to you at Pitt. it’s a very good school, I’ve come to see. I hope they come up with some money for you.

@wgmcp, thank you for your advice. I wasn’t aware of some of what you’ve told me about Lafayette, so I appreciate hearing it. D won’t be going to Lafayette because of money. She liked Tulane and URoc both very much, including their neuro departments, but again it came down to money. She’s not so much concerned about UMD not having a neuro major or minor because her interests in neuro have to do with language, particularly polymaths, and UMD has a Language Science Center which pulls together all the language-related fields and has a part in the distribution of tons of DoD and intelligence community dollars to them. D’s not particularly interested in DoD or intel work, but she is interested in the science of language learning. She can access that science in several different departments at UMD. She also has the ability at UMD to create her own major, so she might do that.

@warren1717 there’s two Facebook pages that I know of! Ones university of pittsburgh class of 2018 and the other is pitt class of 2018!

@jkeil911 a very belated thanks on my end. been swamped the rest of y’all, are y’all excited about Pitt yet??!
