Daughter just got her acceptance letter. There was no email or update on the web site, but she got a large envelope that said “Congradulations” on the out side and a nice letter with information on the next steps.

My D also got the acceptance letter indicating her eligibility to UHC. It also indicates that a formal UHC notification and a Scholarship letter will be sent separately. We’re also waiting for a GAP invitation but nothing was mentioned in the acceptance letter.

My D applied on 9/29/13 and received her acceptance letter on 10/08/13. The letter congratulated her on being accepted into the School of Arts and Sciences and the UHC. It also said that she was being reviewed for scholarships. A week later she received a letter granting her a freshman guarantee to the DPT program. We met with the admissions office last week and they said that the scholarship info could take 2 weeks or 2 months. It sounds like it’s rolling as well. The info that we got was that you had to have at least a 1450 to be considered and that the OOS amount usually starts at $10,000. Hope that information helps!

@Gracieone, Thanks for the info. I will not likely send my D (OOS) to Pitt if she doesn’t get a full merit scholarship although I’m not sure how many incoming freshmen can get the scholarship.

Gracieone, thanks for the info. My son exceeded the threshold for the DPT Guarantee and we’re waiting on an acceptance letter. It’s good to know that the DPT Guarantee will be separate from the acceptance letter (assuming he is accepted, of course).

SAT scores were sent on 10/24 but then he found out that his transcripts had not arrived. Hoping for news by the end of this week.

so in my envelope ,there is only the acceptance letter and info on the next step…does that mean I get no scholarships at all? :/

Hi klkl3045! I really don’t know the answer to your question, but Pitt’s minimums for merit consideration are 1450 SAT/33 ACT, Overall “A” average, and top 5% ranking if reported from your high school. If you qualify, you might want to contact your admission’s rep and ask if your file will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Also, this doesn’t rule out financial aid, just merit aid. Good luck!

Pitt does not have a “minimum” for merit consideration. It does have and communicate an average which is quite high. The current figure reflects an upward trend but in particular the entering class of 2013. It’s very important to recognize that geographic residence, URM status , gender (women going into engineering–men going into nursing) MAY and CAN play a factor. You will notice that Pitt unlike some schools does NOT offer automatic scholarships or participate in the roster of schools that guarantee aid to National Merit Semi Finalists or Finalists. You might also note that unlike recent prior years Pitt has not mailed out a batch of scholarship announcements. In previous years these began popping up as early as October. Expect the unexpected. They may say the average is now 1500 and rank 5 percent or they may say nothing. It can be murky!

Sorry for bad information! I looked quickly on the website under merit aid but went back, re-read it carefully and you’re correct. The language reads “In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:” which led me to believe that it was a minimum. This process is murky at best and I appreciate your input. Fingers crossed that they will start sending letters soon!

i can say my kid is in scholarship pool with a 1450 SAT. This does not mean he will get one but his acceptance letter noted he’d be considered for scholarships and he would be notified down the road if he got one. I know another kid with a slightly lower SAT that did not get this statement in their admissions letter. My guess is Pitt will start with the kids at 1450 and up as their possible scholarship pool and hopefully extend it to kids that are close to these scores for their scholarship evaluations. Just a guess. i am also under the impression that Pitt likes to keep their options wide open on scholarships so they can award the money however the scholarship committee wants to and I certainly respect Pitt handling scholarships this way if my assumptions are correct.

And here is the other piece…Fortunately or unfortunately the majority of CC children offered full rides and very generous Pitt scholarships go elsewhere (CC not all recipients). Everyone here is excited when the offer is made but it’s the beginning of the season for many such children. And as to be expected they and their families compare and contrast as the mail comes in. There is a years worth of archive here to bear that out. This is the other reason why the University of Pittsburgh keeps their options open. They may re-extend the funds to another child (with perhaps similar or slightly lower SATs than the first) or with some specialized scholarships merely put the monies back in the coffers for future years.

They may also still give a scholarship to a 1420 from South Dakota over a 1450 from Ohio or PA or NJ. It is not a guarantee merit school. The truth is there may be two wrong or right math SAT answers between a 1420 and a 1450. If a school can bring a Tennessee kid into their university family of Midwesterners and Northerners, they may choose to do so. This is the other reason Pitt and many colleges and universities do NOT publish hard guidelines on these matters. They do like to publicize the impressive averages. It’s marketing and from their vantage good PR.

As someone who sat as a Trustee on an Admissions Committee for several years at one of the most selective LAC in the country, I often still find myself gingerly nudging parents off the compulsion with a single digit. It’s a recipe for disappointment. Why? Because even if a child meets or gets close to the assumed magic numbers they are in a pool with many similar others and everyone is not going to get generous or any merit aid. Much more goes into these final decisions. And with PITT announcing weeks ago that vast increase in applications, the selection becomes even tighter, even more tenuous.

So true. We realize kid is in pool and that’s it. But great advice. And again, speaking of mine because I am most familiar with his options, he has, I think, a guaranteed full tuition option at one school, guaranteed partial tuition at another, and we are guessing will at least be competitive for scholarships at his other schools. And I say this not to boast as there are kids with considerably better stats, better extracurricular, more AP’s etc. My point is that even kids with decent stats have lots of scholarship opportunities and the better the applications, the more opportunities these kids get. Not sure where mine will end up but obviously he is not attending every school where he gets offered some kind of scholarship and lots of other kids will be in same boat. So scholarship doors could open up again next spring when kids offered initial scholarships finalize their plans. and totally agreed there is little difference between a 1420 and 1450.

exactly…mommabear…we just took our daughter to a nearby private college for an interview last week. Small pretty campus, decent nursing program with a new building and lots of simulation dummies etc. The admissions officer took my husband and me aside after interviewing D and said her SATs and school record alone will get her 25K. It’s not a top tier school but it will suit her purpose and ours IF other schools do not pan out. In the land of solid middle class living and 40-60K colleges there are no “OMG dream” schools, it’s about finding a list of schools you would be very content at, a place where you will learn, and grow without leaving with a truck load of loans, esp since she plans to work and then get a higher degree in nursing. Gratefully in Washington DC, all families from the gazillionaires to the impoverished are given a 10,000 grant annually to carry to any public/state university. It goes toward tuition, fees, etc. So if she chooses one of those, that will at least come in handy!

DS '14 got his acceptance today from Pitt and acceptance into neuroscience and the University Honors College today. No word on scholarships, but we’ll keep hoping

Accepted to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences with an intended major in biological sciences. Applied 10/9 received acceptance on 11/8. Just wanted to comfort anyone who is anxious about being accepted. I think it depends on how strong you are as a student. I had low SAT and average ACT score: 1660 superscore and 26 composite but I am a strong student, had many ECs, strong recommendations and essay. I considered Pitt my reach school and it is my first choice. I’m still keeping my options opens, but it seems I will be going there next fall. :)

Yeah on the new admits! Congrats and welcome!

I’m a senior who applied to Pitt and had all my materials in and checked off on the application check on 10/28. I routinely check my Pitt connect and a few other schools status check out of habit everyday. Since I’ve gotten everything in, my check marks and page never really seemed to change but today the box with the check marks disappeared. I’m wondering if that means they made a decision on me and sent something or whatever. Has this happened to anyone and for those already accepted has that page changed for you

Also if rejected does and would Pitt send notifications now or would they wait and send them out later like end of December or something.

Don’t waste your valuable time to check Pitt Connect. It’s very slow in updating the status. My D got acceptted notice in mail in Nov 12 but her Pitt connect account has not been updated. Just check your mailbox frequently. :(

LOL My daughter was accepted in AUGUST and her status online still just says “Submitted.” I emailed the OoA just to make sure and they obviously confirmed her acceptance but also said they do not update statuses online- but yet I’ve heard of others saying their online status states ‘Accepted’ so who knows.

I was accepted on November 1!
32 ACT
3.97 Unweighted, 4.64 GPA on 5.5 scale
Sent supplementary essay on my Eagle Scout Service Project and a recommendation letter. Accepted to UHC and waiting on possible merit aid.
