If I got accepted to Columbian, can I do a double major where one major is at Columbian and the other is at Elliot? I feel like they wouldn't let you do that since it's a really sneaky way to go to Elliot. I think I read somewhere it was okay, but it sounds too good to be true

Yes, you can do it. They call it “cross-schools” or something like that. You would just apply to a certain major program at Elliot but fulfill the GCRs of Columbian.

so you dont need to do a whole transfer app or anything?

why don’t you speak directly to the school?

I’m not sure about the app for it… But nysmom is right, if you call the offices of either Columbian or Elliot they can tell you about it.

Emailed them, still would appreciate input tho

No need to transfer, unless you really want to.

Sweet, so no messy applications? You just sign up for it without any hassle?

Exactly. Only the gen ed requirements between the schools are different; other than that, you can double major in whatever you wish. You just have to declare a major at your base school.

To summarize:
If you are in Columbian College and want to double major in Elliott you can if you get permission, however your degree will come from the Colombian College, not Elliott. (Double Major vs Double Degree) I don’t know how important this is.

I’m planning on doing the exact opposite-- Accepted to Elliot but my second major is in Columbia.

Just a comment - new acceptees. You may want to wait at least 1 semester and discuss double majors (within or cross school) with your advisor. It’s relatively “easy” to double major vs. double degree (the latter requires 30 more credit hours than your 1st degree). It also helps if you have lots of AP credit.

However, as my “S” is finding out (ESIA) - his advisor recommended against a double major in IA and PoliSci (CCAS) e.g. Too redundant. Also, ESIA’s language requirements are stiff and take a lot of credit hours. Then there’s study abroad where not all classes will easily count towards your major or transfer back to GW. Then there’s internships which can take a lot of your “free” time if done during the semester - i.e. you’ll want a lighter schedule that semester.

Wait - there’s plenty of time for this.

My 2 cents worth.

CJ

Yeah I’m not interested in a double degree. Just so long as I can double major across schools without hassle
