ACCEPTED! East Carolina U Class of 2013

oh wow. great! more money to spend that i dont have right now lol

hey packmom, any pros and cons on dorms and apartments?

Hmm, guess they are trying to predict who is actually serious about attending after this years huge influx of freshmen (largest class in sch. history) caused a dorm/bed shortage.
I had read that they were going to limit the size of next years freshman class in order to avoid that situation again. Sounds like the first five thousand or so to send their money in, gets guaranteed dorm space doesn't it? I would go ahead and send the money just to be safe.

xx3, if you are a freshman( just out of high school), I would recommend trying to get a dorm room. Since you are starting mid-year, it would help you get more acclimated to the campus and feel a part of the school. The dorms are mostly populated by freshmen and sophs. If you are older and don't want to live with 18 yr.olds, then I would say go for an apt. on the busline or try Campus Towers, a privately owned apt. tower right on the edge of campus.
If money is a deciding factor, you'll have to add up all the expenses and figure out which is your best deal. Keep in mind that apt. leases are for the entire year, not just the school year.

Any suggestions for a freshman dorm? D loves the 4/2 style and was hoping for a dorm in the central campus area or are freshman dorms exclusively somewhere else?

I'm 17 and won't be turning 18 until Feb.

I read that the room and board fee was about $7000. is that per semester or per year? because if thats per semester, i think getting an apartment will be MUCH cheaper!

nessa:

Hall Information Chart - about $4000 and $4800 per year for housing

ECU Campus Dish - meal plans between $1200 and $1700 per semester

xx3, tutition and fees +room and board cost us around $6000 for this semester.

njsm, There are no exclusively freshman dorm unless you join the First Year Experience program. There is one dorm (Garrett/not suites) exclusively for that.

Almost all of the dorms at ECU are Hall style with one large central bathroom per floor.
S2 lives in a suite style (not his choice just got put there). It is an all male dorm. There are 4 rooms (8 guys) to one bathroom (one sink, one shower, one toilet). There is one co-ed dorm(Belk) with the same arrangement. It is in the College Hill area.
College Hill suites is the newest dorm with two rooms (each with their own bathroom) connected by a central living space. It is nice but freshmen are not allowed to live there.

Central Campus is great (I lived there as a soph.) but on our campus tour last year, the guide discouraged Freshman from choosing Central Campus. He said not that many freshman lived there. Cotton is an all female central campus dorm that I feel sure freshman prob. live in. It's a hall-style too.
S2 has friends who live in the hall style dorms. He prefers them because he said they have met way more people in their dorm versus a suite where you mostly just see your suite mates all the time.
Don't get too caught up in dorm preferences until you can check out the housing app. form. Last year, you could not designate a specific dorm, only the area you wished to live in (College Hill, Central or West Campus).

When did you apply? How long did it take for you to get your letter after the website had all of your items checked off as received?

i don't know a lot about ECU, but some people have suggested it for my DD.

can you all tell me the great things about ECU???

mamagym, my D wasn't able to check her status online at ECU. D applied on 10/13 and received an acceptance letter dated 10/20. I assume they accepted her based on her application and test scores because it seemed that once they received her HS transcript the letter went out.

Mike, I don't know much about ECU, D toured with my husband so I can't give you first hand knowledge. All I know is that D loved the campus layout, the dorms, and the football. She WANTS to go out-of-state and she applied to ECU because they had her major and the fact that tuition is only a little more being out-of-state as opposed to in-state in NJ.

I applied on 9/29 and got my letter 10/15. So, it really doesn't take long to get accepted. I got accepted for Spring btw, not fall.

ECU has a nice campus. It is definitely one of the best schools of MUSIC. It has a very good medical school and its very affordable. I, myself, do not know too much yet. I stayed in Fleming for a month last year because I did Summer Ventures in Science and Math. The doors are nice. They're also clean. The library is a very nice place I believe. The food at Todd is pretty good. They have a wide variety. There are a few restaurants on the outskirts of the campus and including a few on campus.

MikeW....Great things about ECU....Great school spirit...football game days are big fun (check out youtube for some videos).
The town of Greenville,NC (pop. 70,000 ECU's home) is very supportive of the university, even the city fire trucks are painted purple and gold.....ECU is a big school with a small school feel...Opened in 1907, some of the original buildings are still in use. They are beautiful red brick with tile roofs surrounding a large green with old trees known as the Mall.....the new Student Recreation Center is very impressive..Joyner library is really nice.. Wide variety of majors...Mendenhall Student Center has it's own bowling alley and movie theater...Todd Dining hall was completely renovated this past summer, lots of dining options...The ECU bus transit system is very convenient for going anywhere in town. ECU is in the heart of downtown Greenville so there are places students can walk to...a car is not necessary.

If you go to a site called College Click TV and type in East Carolina, there are lots of videos of current students talking about the school. My S enjoyed watching those when he was a senior getting ready to head off to ECU. He's a freshman there now and loving it.

xx3nessa...Yah for Fleming. I lived there many years ago. Also lived in Jarvis and Clement.

Anyone else get accepted to Fall 09? D has heard back from other schools but East Carolina continues to be first on her list.

Good luck Pirates against Tulsa on Saturday!!

Go Pirates!!! The game is at noon and will be televised on ESPN2.

Exams start on Fri. (crossing fingers for fresh. son). Can't believe he'll be home on the 12th.

D accepted a couple of weeks ago, but not likely to attend. Already has acceptances from schools higher on the list.

Pacmom, where the dorms open during the Thanksgiving break? How much time did the students have if they decided to come home.

Believe it or not, D is already planning on what she should do to come home next year!!

D was accepted about a month ago. Is waiting to hear from other schools now. We went to the open house a few weeks back and I was impressed with the school spirit.

JSM...Has your D sent he housing form in yet? Some of the dorms are designated "Academic Year Halls"...that means they are open on schools breaks for kids who choose to stay. I assumed that meant the entire break but I'm not positive. S2 signed up for one of those halls just in case he should decide to leave late or return early for any school break.

All schools in the UNC system are off Wed.,Thurs., and Fri. for Thanksgiving break. All the kids leave on Tues. as soon as classes end. S2 had only one class on Tues.(because his Tues. Bio. lab had finished the week before) and that class was canceled so he ended up coming home for T-giving on Monday night.

ECU football just won the Conference USA championship ...WooHoo..GO Pirates
On to Memphis and the Liberty Bowl...Arrrggghhh!

Wow! I haven't been on in quite a while. I'm glad ECU won! I saw my boyfriend's brother on TV. He's one of the drum majors for the marching band. Believe it or not, I want to start packing to move into my apartment! I'm super excited to go to college!

We haven't sent the housing deposit in because applications won't be online until January.

If my D was going to take Amtrak home and the station is out by I-95, about 45 minutes away, will she be able to travel back and forth?

She won't have a car so my concern is an alternate route rather than flights from Greenville because it's not a direct flight home and in case the airfare is too expensive.

I have a question, ECU has rolling admissions right? If I applied this week when would I find out if I was accepted?
