I honestly didn't think I'd have this many choices. Deciding is going to be near impossible.

I want to know ANY information you all have regarding these schools. What are the typical students like? Are the dorms nice? How's the food? Have you heard anything about any of these major programs? If so, what? Do you know someone who goes there? Do they like it? etc.

New York University (Tisch) - Recorded Music (Steinhardt music minor)
University of Southern California (Thornton) - Popular Music
Berklee College of Music - Performance/Contemporary Writing & Production
University of Miami (Frost) - Music Business (Creative American Music minor)
The New School (Jazz/Lang) - Arts/Jazz BA/BFA
I was also accepted to VCU as a safety, but I'm not going there.

Feel free to compare & contrast aspects of schools or just name off everything you know about a particular one. Like I said, any input is welcome. Thanks, and best of luck to you all who are still waiting on schools!

The only school I know about here is USC, and I love what I know about it.

Weather is phenomenal. I’ve lived in southern California my whole life and there’s just something about going outside during winter and tanning… hahaha. It’s sunny and beautiful and the buildings are clean and well-kept and sharp and new, so it has all the aesthetic appeal you could dream of. Students legitimately believe that the great weather has boosted their grades because the sunshine cheers them up and encourages them to study! It’s also down the street from the new Sports Center and it’s in LA so there’s a ton of amazing stuff to do.

The academics are well-recognized, and certainly on the rise. The strong alumni network brings in a lot of donations (the most recognized recently being $200 mil to the College) and this is definitely not a school that is short on funding, so you’ll get smaller class sizes and top notch academic advising. Sports are amazing in almost every area, so there’s tons of school spirit and stuff to get excited about.

I know one person who goes to USC and they absolutely love it. When I told them I got in, they seriously told me to withdraw all other applications because they thought there was no other school in the country that could compare to the overall experience they’re getting at USC. So the students just seem… happy, i guess. hahah.

I know this is only info about one school, but it’s a little something about one of the front runners in my mind!

You might also want to post this question in the music forum.

What do YOU like about each school?

go to the new school. it’s the best

Thanks, all! Please keep the input coming! I do have an order of preference in mind, but I don’t know if it will withstand the test of time or if my first choice will be switched once I have even more information. The current order of preference is as follows:

1st choice: NYU
2nd choice: tie between USC and Berklee
3rd choice: The New School
4th choice: UMiami
5th choice: VCU

The top 3 are very close appeal-wise, so it’s still a very tough decision. If it seems like I’m making the wrong choice, there’s a method to the madness, trust me. I’ll finish my pros and cons list soon and post it here when I’m done, but in the meantime, please keep sharing!

I can vouch for Berklee.

The dorms are quite spacious, many even have their own private bathrooms. The location is great, right off the T and in Boston. There are plenty of other colleges around it to explore and party at.

I have heard nothing but great things about it. The people I know who attend/ed are passionate about music and are up all night jamming, practicing, collaborating, and enjoying themselves.

You should ask this question in the Music Majors Forum. The people there will be familiar with the schools on your list:

[Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

You also need to sit down with your parents and talk about the money situation. After you subtract any grants and scholarships, how much would each of these places cost you? Can your family pay for that out of pocket, or would someone end up in debt up to their eyeballs?

Hey all, thanks for the input! I did link to this thread in the Music Major forum and have gotten some great advice there as well. I’ve posted my own thoughts and stance on where to attend over there, and I’d be very grateful if some of you would take a look and offer some advice based on that:

Thanks again, everyone!

go to Berklee. The music aficionados will know it, and those that aren’t will think you went to Berkeley. You win all around :)

Haha thanks, DunninLA. I’ve already gotten that from a few people when I told them where I applied, even when I specifically said “Berklee College of Music.” x)

USC and UMiami are the best in my opinion. Berklee is great but I’m more into classical. Haven’t heard great stuff about NYU’s music program, but I mostly looked into the performance aspect
