Hi- I could not find a thread for Theater, so I decided to post in here! I am from New Jersey and I was just accepted for Acting. I am thrilled but shocked. Anyone else?

I was accepted too! Thrilled but shocked is also right for me! I’m going to visit on Monday for tour and to meet with some faculty/sit in on classes.

Curious - at UMich, did you audition for MT only or separately audition for BFA Acting? What makes you shocked and thrilled? Can you share your impressions of thr program? Thanks!

At UMich, auditions for Acting and MT, like the programs, are completely separate.

Hi! Well first of all- Thank you so much I auditioned only for the Acting program, though I grew up primarily doing Music Theater. Acting is really my “thing”, and I originally thought that Acting is less competitive than Music Theater. Wrong on my part- it’s actually somewhat more competitive because the programs are smaller. In any case, I was thrilled when I got into UMich- the reason I was/am shocked is because of how selective the program is- only 16 people are chosen. I think one of things I have going for me is that I am from New Jersey, which is relatively far from Michigan, and I guess I had a good audition I am really, really excited. Have yet to receive my FA yet, but I’m not sure how I could turn an offer like this down. The amount of individualized attention I will receive is virtually unparalleled throughout the country, their facilities are fantastic, and of course the training is superb. One of the things I love is that I will have the opportunity to double major- which is usually not even an option when doing a BFA program. I am very, very thankful right now. Just a quick ending note- I applied ED to Northwestern and did not get in. Heartbroken. Auditioned at several schools( most of which I am still waiting to hear back from), but did NOT get into Ithaca, which had become my top choice, so to speak. Then of course, I got into Michigan. So, in conclusion, everything definitely happens for a reason :)

Thanks for your views. My S also was accepted at UMich Acting BFA and this seems to be his first choice. Also accepted into Ithaca BFA Acting, Syracuse BFA MT and UArts BFA MT; waitlisted Penn State MT. Waiting to hear on 2 others. Was curious about your views on UMich Acting because everyone talks about the MT program … but he really loves what he has seen in the Acting program so far. Any details or comparisons with the other programs listed here … feel free to share your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi, I am currently a sophomore in high school in NJ, and I am hoping that when the time comes, I might be able to be accepted into the Acting Program at U-M. Do you have any suggestions or tips? Like, for the audition or to help with the application? How many people auditioned vs those accepted? Also, for the academic admission, what do you think puts you over the edge from other applicants? Thank you so much and congrats on your acceptances!

@Villagesongbird- Hopefully your son and I will go to school together! From what I have seen and read, the UMich Acting program seems to be just as developed as the MT program. What I love about the school is that they encourage you to to take voice/dance classes and other electives in the college, as well as offering you the opportunity to double major. I really feel that I am going to become an intellectually based actress there, which is very appealing. I truly don’t think that there is another conservatory style program in a world-class university.

@theaterbound13-Thank you! Make sure you pick material that is fun for YOU to do; that way, it makes the auditions less stressful. Just be yourself and go in with an open mind. I think what put me over the edge is the fact that I’m strong academically; not to sound cocky, but not only am I passionate and gifted in this art form, but I had good grades/SATs and wrote a good essay. You do have to be INVITED to audition, so make sure you spend a good deal of time on the application.

I think you will be in school together and you sound a lot like him! He’d kill me if he knew I was posting on the board, btw! (lol). He is very academic, tons of AP classes, loves writing, in addition to acting, singing, dance. Also loves all types of acting/performance forms including film and experimental. FYI - I did some surveying with some contacts in the theater and film world to ask their advice as well, and unanimously said UMich is the place to be … really strong curriculum and faculty - the rigor students should be seeking to prepare them well for a future in the industry. So exciting! We are visiting one more time in the near future to “seal the deal” … but I suspect you will be meeting soon!

Congrats to you guys! I don’t have anything specific to relate but will say that my niece graduated from the BFA Acting program at Michigan this past May and really loved it.

Just so most amazing production at UMich with the BFA Acting students. Wow - unbelievable and hard stuff. Blown away.

^Cool. I think my son’s GF may have been involved in that one, given the date, and son may have helped with sound design.

My son is at the SOMTD in another music-related program, but he loves it. I suspect Cinderella and VillageSon will enjoy it, so congrats!

if youve been accepted for acting or directing at mich, join the class of 2016 bfa acting facebook group!

I tried finding the group on facebook, but I couldn’t is it just the class of 2016 bfa acting? or is called something else?
