I've been accepted for the summer session but my family has a farm and they need me there over the summer. We also can't come up with the extra 6000 dollars needed for it. I've talked to admissions and they won't just switch me to the fall. My parents also believe in having me go away to college and I do not want to stay here for another two years. Has anyone every heard of people transferring after one semester at a local campus? I can't actually do the 2+2 plan because of my major, I have to go out to UP after 3 semesters. Any options I didn't think of? Penn State is my top choice even with the crappy financial aid.
Thanks

dukeycn: I believe you cannot transfer to University Park until you have two full years worth of college credits. From the website:

Transfer students to Penn State University Park must have taken two years of full-time college coursework before the time of transfer. Some programs have additional requirements that are noted below.

You should call the admissions office to see what your options are.

Duke - I feel your pain. My daughter was accepted beginning Summer Session at Main too, but had already decided on a Study Abroad Summer program in Brazil (she’ll be an International Politics major). We had to file an appeal with the Admissions Office to request consideration for Fall 2010 start instead of Summer. It was just an e-mail to the AO explaining the circumstances. We heard back in about 2 weeks that the ARB (Admissions Review Board) had met and had approved her change. It seemed very much to be a formal process, set up to deal with these kinds of circumstances.

And, I think the stronger your credentials are, the more likely they are to look favorably on this change request.

Good Luck.

Appeal and explain the issues. Put it in writing and be polite, with a little desperation thrown in. Explain the financial impact, and how not going to Penn State will effect your future. Just plead your case in writing as part of an official appeal. You have a shot at it. Write the appeal as if it were an admissions essay and try to blow them away with why you need to wait until fall and why they might want you as part of their student body. you have nothing to loose.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I never thought of appealing to them in writing. Thanks!

I checked off the “would you consider attending Summer session etc…” on the online application. When my letter came in it said that i was accepted into the Summer session. The first time i called i was told that i did not make the Fall 2010 semester. I called again to make sure. I talked to the admissions line and after awhile, my she forwarded my application to Fall 2010. I am now happily accepted into the Fall Semester
My advice would be to call the admissions building and see what they can do for you.
