hey guys
i have been accpeted to PSU, NYU, NJIT, Umass OSU, Stonybrook, Ubuffalo, Purdue,
the first four are for computer engineering and the rest are for CS
any idea about these unis i need to pick one of them i need help…
How much does each cost if you add (tuition, room, board, fees), and subtract (grant, scholarships)?
What’s your parents’ budget out of pocket (income+ savings) and do they have an opinion on the matter?
What are you looking for?
Right now, unless it’s MUCH cheaper than the others, I’d cross out NJIT.
Re: NYU, I’d guess you know this already, but the school of engineering is in Brooklyn, not lower Manhattan with thee rest of the University.
Also, I’d guess you know this too, but Computer Engineering and Computer Science are VERY different programs. CS is programming, CE is about the designing computer hardware. Alsi, in most schools computer engineers spend almost all of their first two years taking the same courses all engineers take.
Look at sample curricula from these programs and see what classes you’d be taking to help you narrow down your list.
I’ll add that at PSU (and perhaps others) you aren’t really admitted to a major until your 4th semester. Looking at the two curricula there, the first year is very similar so you could use that time to figure out what direction you prefer (although you don’t really do any computer engineering until semester 5)
@Dreadpirit yeh i do know the difference between CE and CS…
But i thought all unis have 4 semesters in common for engineering and 5 semester we work on our major…
I have a questions so if i dont get good gpa will i end up not going into my major after 2 years??
I am planning to change to CS for PSU and they told i could ask my adviser about it…
So which one do u prefer for job opportunities CS or CE??
do both of them have calculas??
@MYOS1634 budget is not a big issue unless it goes above 55k
At Penn State you would easily be able to switch from CS to cse or vice versa due to the program’s structure. The major requires you to reach a minimal passing GPA with passing grades in your pre reqs.
This being said, UMass is a great university for CS and Amherst, where it’s located, is a great college town (not to mention you have the proximity of the 5 college consortium and the opportunity to attend classes there if you wish);
Purdue is very prestigious in CS and Engineering and you may find that a plus or a minus, but it’s very stem-centric (so, if you like being around stem guys, it’s great, but if you’d rather be around people who enjoy lots of different fields, it’s not so great… really a personal preference.) Also, in my opinion, Amherst>State College > West lafayette.
CS and cse both have excellent career prospects so it’s really a matter of what you prefer to do.
Engineering and CS will both require a pretty good handle on math, though ( especially calculus for Engineering, and specially discrete math for CS).
thanks a lot @MYOS1634 this helped me a lot
i hope switching is easy at penn state…
and do engineering and cs students have first 2 years in common ??
i have already been admitted to all these universities so wat if my HS final GPA comes lower than my mid term will it be a problem??
i got 87% in midterms and my predicted is 91%
but i dont think i will make to 85% also
so will my admission get cancelled ??
it’d only get cancelled MAYBE if you hit C-range, and definitely if you fall below that.
you’re lucky, I had to look it up for someone else, so here we go:
https://rap.psu.edu/computer-engineering-university-park
https://rap.psu.edu/computer-science-university-park
don’t know for the others but you can look at “recommended academic progression” or “major flow chart” for the other universities
@heyitsme11 Penn State won’t even ask for any grades after you are accepted. So, as long as you graduate, you are good. The exception would be if you needed say, 4 maths to get into Engineering - but only 3 to graduate from high school, and you fail that fourth math. You’d pass to graduate, but you wouldn’t meet the requirements to be in the pre-major any longer. So basically, don’t fail any classes required for your admission and it won’t matter. Penn State will not ask for your senior year grades.
@heyitsme Please let us know what you ultimately decide and why you made that decision. Thank you.
Thnks a lot @MYOS1634 and @jihpsu
So if I pass all my test then it will not be a problem right thnkz
@STEM2017 what do u mean by final decision… If u mean what will I be taking then, the point is I am admitted to college of engineering so I can change once I start the fall class and I called them up they told u can ask ur advisor about it…
