Accepted from waitlist, but hard to make a decision,

D was accepted from the waitlist to MCS which is her second choice (SCS is rejected). We made deposit to NYU CAS. Both school give almost same financial aid. CMU has better campus or maybe overall programs, but NYU is close to home, and she can study computer science in CAS. Tomorrow is due for CMU deposit, none of family member has any idea. We never visited CMU before, and it's too later to visit.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

Hi,

If your daughter is very keen on studying computer science, then I would suggest NYU. SCS at CMU is very, very hard to transfer into. In addition, she will get so many opportunities in New York City for internships and jobs. I wouldn’t go by the campus either. CMU is a great school, but if she can’t study Computer Science, then it would be better if she went to NYU.

thanks! ~~~

Hi
My son is going to CMU for Math but he found out many many students minor in CS. The deciding factor should be comparing the two CS programs not the overall school. I heard some CS programs are software programming driven and some are focused on other areas. I thnik your D would do well studying the CS program that she has envisoned.
I am from NYC and went to NYU graduate school. I have visited CMU several times over the last two years and would let my daughter go to Pittshburgh in a heart beat. The city has a great reputation for low crime and the CMU students ride the buses for free, lots to see and do e.g museums, zoo, stores, shows, and sports.
However, NYC can be distracting, expensive and I’d make sure she knows self defense if she plans on riding the subway or buses.

I’m from NYC too and I (along with my parents) chose CMU over Cooper U. mainly because of the limit it would place on how late I can stay out because of the dangers of the city and the subway rides. Pittsburgh’s a much cleaner and quieter city in comparison, and CMU offers more safety options.
But since the deposit has been made, it’s kind of hard to pay another 800 to switch to CMU…

Thanks for your inputs! Will talk to D again after school, we pick whatever she chooses in last minutes.
