Accepted in my dream school but I can't afford it... Devastated

Hi everyone.

I'm an international student who applied to several schools in the United States. I want to major in Computer Science and so far I was accepted in the University of Texas - Austin, University of Minnesota and FSU.

University of Texas was my absolute dream school, but the price for out of state students is extremely high ($33k for tuition) and my country wasn't willing to pay that amount (this is how it works, my country offers loans at 0% but that's another story), so the only school that I can afford (including room, fees etc.) within the loan's budget was Minnesota.

I wanted some advice from you guys here... UT is my dream school and I never thought of getting in. Do you think I should attend a CC in Texas and try to transfer, or forget about it and attend U-Minnesota? My biggest fear is that even if I do excellent at a Community College, I might not be lucky enough to be accepted at UT, since they only accept 1% internationals. I consider myself extremely lucky to be even accepted this time..

I don't have anything against Minnesota, it's a nice school but I've never been up there and I've heard the weather is terrible.. UT is also much more prestigious than UMN...

What should I do? The education in my country is terrible so that's not an option.
Thank you very much.

Go to UMN you will have just as good a CS experience for undergraduate. No use taking crummy CC classes for 2 years when you can be taking university level CS which is not even offered at CC. Yes terrible weather but you just get the right outerwear and everyone is used to it, they plow everything efficiently.

Go to UMN. If you can’t afford UT now, you won’t be able to afford UT in two years. UMN is a fine school; you should consider yourself lucky.

UT is only more prestigious because Texas is a bigger state than Minnesota. I live in Texas now and I was a CS major at Minnesota many years ago. I know a bit about both. The weather in Minnesota can be challenging for anyone not accustomed to the cold. However, the campus, while large, has well-maintained property and heat in the buildings.

The academics at UMinn are top-notch and there is no reason to be even a little disappointed about that choice.

Life’s not fair/there’s no free lunch. That’s why I joined the NJ Army National Guard and was able to go to Rutgers U. for a BS Computer Science for free with the State Tuition Waiver law.
