accepted in UCLA DesignlMedia Arts..?

anyone? Because as of now, I don't know anyone (including myself) who got in. I knew the department was competitive, but this competitive? So it'd be great if you guys posted your stats and some of your portfolio work. It'd be a GREAT help actually.

guessing no one else got in then..hah.

I got in, but when I picked this major I didn't really know it was really selective until my brother gave me this pdf file:
http://www.aim.ucla.edu/data/students/3qtr/iars.thirdweek.3qtravg.Deptprof-headcount.pdf
(pg 3 is design | media & arts statistics)

Stats:

SATI 1950 (M680, W640, R630)
SATII: MathIIc 630, U.S. History 700
APs: U.S.HIstory-4, AP Comp-3
GPA: 3.93W, 3.95UW, 3.58nonweighted
Essays were okay
And my ECs included:
Some random work around the community--senior citizen centers, key club
and leadership

That's pretty much it. I'm sorry you didn't get in!

hey back_space congrats--do you have any files of pieces from your portfolio that I could look at? my friend just got rejected from the design program...it'd be interesting to see what she was up against.

thanks back_space, and congrats!
your stats were just a bit better than mine...so i guess it was the portfolio that made the difference?

Well, I'm not sure how good my portfolio was because I've never really learned anything about it. But, here are a few of my friend's favorite from my portfolio:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/ender456/2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/ender456/6.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/ender456/4.jpg

(note: that's my friend, not me!)

Would you mind posting some of your portfolio or your friends'? None of my friends are into design, so I can't really see other peoples' work.

Thanks (:

so you have photography pieces...did you have any digital work?
here are some of my pieces:

http://www.geocities.com/saramethyst/tainted.jpg

congrats on those who got into DMA. yea, it's competitive. i was accepted last year, but I switched to another major. dma wasn't what i wanted it to be.

haha well i didn't apply to design/media arts, but I'm definitely really into art. Either way, I'll just share some of my work though just for fun or whatever...

my site is http://www.nydoll.inspirelight.net

OhTHATguy, what was wrong with the DMA dept?

I got in

I have an online portfolio of some of my work, but I mainly turned in graphics

http://serenastyle.com

I think what got me in was that everything I emphasized related to my major. My most prominent ec: being special feature of our school's newspaper. My awards were all art awards, and 2 out of 3 of my essays were related to creativity and living in an artistic environment. My grades/SATs were pretty mediocre compared to other students at my school (4.07, 2030, 760, 700, 700) but I was always on the GATE/honors/AP track. Anyway, I'M LOOKING FOR FUTURE CLASSMATES!! ...and is anyone going to the arts&arch orientation?

Wow, Serena, that's quite a nice webpage you got there. And I can see that you're in Norcal haha. Anyway, I'm not an Art major and personally, I really dislike the arts. (haha I'm a science major). Anyway, but I do also know that when you apply to ucla school of the arts, it does highly depend on your portfolio and yes it is a competitive school to get into.

Sorry lilmissarah for taking so long to reply back (i've been stuck with a lot of homework)!

I only have one digital work from my portfolio because my computer had crashed a few weeks ago and I only recovered a few of my files. Here was my self-portrait:

I took many classes .. around 7 years >< of art and design hoping to get into this major. However, when I did, I was not learning anything new. >< that ****ed me off. Of course, there were some things here and there, but I didn't want to waste my college years on review. (Not to be cocky or anything) ;P

I surprisingly got in! and now I am really excited to take actual design classes considering that most of what I know is self-taught.
Stats:
SAT 1910(V600, M619, W700)
SATII US History 640, Literature 620, Math 2c 520
GPA 4.11W, 4.0UW
A couple of AP's, girl scouts, community service, free lance work, small business owner, and I am really active in school activities. Again, I really don't know how it happened since I guess the program is really competitive, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Thanks to those who posted their portfolio material!

So it seems like I'll be going to USC for art instead (finally got my letter!) or I might try transferring to Art Center in a few years...anyone know any specifics on USC and Art Center's graphic design programs?

I got in.

Some sample pieces from my portfolio:

I took a super short, week-long course last summer at D|MA's Summer Institute (a print design course), and I won a few awards for my magazine final project. That might've helped me get in. Although besides that class, I'm completely self-trained and independently-taught.

I'm turning down the offer, however. I'll be going to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

wow itsallverbage, i love your work! thanks for posting them up!

i was considering going to dma's summer institute last summer too, but i chose innerspark/csssa at calarts instead. and i don't regret that really. Because USC's Roski school of fine arts is for me!

hey back_space, do you mind reuploading the pieces from your portfolio? i'm applying for dma this fall, and i'd love all the help with my portfolio i can get.

I was actually curious about something. Does the work you submit have to be a hundred percent original? As in you need the rights to the photographs/textures/brushes/etc in your graphics? Or is it more like getting an idea of what you can do with these tools? Like could I submit this:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b55/sweetteethwallpaper/fall1.jpg

Not that I'm applying, but I'm just curious. (And yes, that is my wallpaper.)
