Accepted into College of Design - Design Studies

Hello everyone! I recently got accepted into NCSU college of design - design studies program. I applied as a transfer student and will be attending State as a sophomore. I went to a NC community college for my freshmen year because I just moved to NC a year ago and I wanted to research their schools more and apply for residency. My dad is in the military so moving to NC was kind of sudden. I made all As and have about 40 credits and wrote a good essay with a letter of recommendation. (I did some duel enrollment in high school) This was my first choice and my second choice was Visual Arts/fine arts. I didn't apply to their studio based majors because I didn't know much about their school of design or what I wanted to do exactly and so I applied at the normal transfer date. I researched this beforehand of course but there wasn't a whole lot of reviews or information from other people because I'm pretty sure its a newer program, but this sounded good for what I wanted for my future at the time I applied. Not sure if any of this information is important or not.

Anyways I want to do graphic design or web development/design. I'd like to apply to a studio based major - Graphic design before November for my junior year. Or major transfer to a major for web development. Does anyone know anything about the Design Study program? Is this a good major? Or at least a good major to use to transfer into graphic design? Should I be excited about being accepted into it? It said admittance to the design studies program was competitive. But maybe all majors are?

Maybe I'm just getting nervous because i'm afraid i'm in the wrong major or i'm not on the right plan to do what I want and I don't want to screw up my future.

I’ve researched my chosen major a lot over the night and today, and I think i’m satisfied with it. It basically confirmed the reason why I choose it in the first place. Sorry for all that extra information. I would edit it out if I could lol. If there’s anything anyone wants to add go ahead! I’d still like to hear what others have to say about the program.

Getting into the design studies program is definitely something to be proud of. Aside from Engineering, it might be one of the most competitive programs at State. I graduated from high school in 2011, and our class salutatorian was accepted into State’s design studies program and decided to attend State over a few other prestigious NC schools, such as Wake and UNC. I don’t attend State, but I know that once you are plugged into a major, especially as a transfer student, it can be hard to switch and graduate on time. State’s Gen Ed program is much different than the NC schools I have attended (UNC Chapel Hill my freshman year and currently UNC Greensboro). Usually you take your gen eds throughout all four years, as opposed to knocking all of them out in your freshman and sophomore year. So, I would make sure that I am 100% on my major before classes begin in the fall. Good luck!

You should be excited. Acceptance into the College of Design is quite competitive…Congratulations!
My daughter is in the studio-based Art + Design major, and loves the COD…she likens it to being part of a Small College family, but with the benefits and resources of a large University. She has one NCSU friend who went through the application process, and transferred from Design Studies to the Graphic Design program after her freshman year. She says that no one is automatically accepted, since it is very competitive. However, being in Design Studies does allow you the opportunity to take academic classes (no studios) from COD professors, and maybe even Dean Malecha. It always helps to build those relationships, in the event you apply for a studio-based major during the Fall. But, ALOT has to do with your personal portfolio of work, and your “design thinking” potential (as judged by the faculty). Good luck…and enjoy the small but artsy side of NC State!

Thank you! And thank you for the replies! That’s comforting to know that I got into a good college/major! Even if I don’t apply or I do apply and don’t get into a studio-based major I think I will still be happy with Design Studies. Also thank you both for the information and advice. I will take it all into consideration.

I was wondering if you followed through on your plans to attend NC state’s design studies program. My daughter was just accepted into this program for Fall 2014. I do not see lots of info on this program. You sound just about like her in your interests on maybe getting into the graphic design program. Would love to know your thoughts on the program and school. Thanks!
