Just wanted to see everyone who got a letter for the Feb. 20th audition, and the others as they get their letters. :)

CONGRATS! My D is quite happy at SHSU. Are you from Texas?

thank you! i can’t wait. i am from texas. northwest houston. :)

I’m an MT major there and I’m loving it. If you’ve got any questions, you can ask me. :)

Does anyone know the audition process for SHSU MT? And how many people get into the program? Because I know that at Texas State, they hold as many as five call back auditions (mostly in Texas) and only accept about 10 freshman into the program every year. And do you know which, if anh MT schools in Texas are a little less selective or have more slots?

2DsnMT can help you with SHSU, she has helped us over the last year. I think she would tell you that SHSU is a good MT program. If I’m not mistaken, they take about 15 new students each year in the MT program.

Texas State has become VERY selective almost overnight with their new MT department head, Kaitlin Hopkins. Better be ready to be among the best in the state if you hope to get into her program.

I think I can say that every other school that offers MT in Texas is less competitive than Texas State.

Other selective audition based programs are TCU and SHSU. Abilene Christian and WTAMU also have MT programs, but are not nearly as selective. Southwestern in Georgetown has a non-audition BFA MT program with very nice facilities. UTEP and North Texas supposedly have MT programs, but I haven’t been able to confirm that from their websites.

Texas State’s new program is selective. They auditioned 600+ and accepted 14 for the new year. However, I would caution that being more selective does not necessarily equate to better…especially in the case of Texas State who has a brand new program. I imagine it will be several years before we can adequately ‘rank’ the quality of their program. They’ve got good people in place and ambitious goals…so they are certainly on the right track.
I don’t know how many SHSU auditions each year but I do know they have a high number of transfers each year. Their stated goal is to not have more than 60 in the program at any one time which rounds out to 15 per class…but in actuality it seems there are more upperclassman than underclassman due to the transfer situation. My D graduated in May with honors from SHSU and had a very good experience there. I believe she would recommend it especially for in-state folks as the tuition is so VERY reasonable.
I have corresponded with the head of UTEP MT program…so it does exist. I don’t believe UNT has an MT program any longer…it was discontinued several years ago.
