I have been accepted into the University of Cincinnati but they could not admit me into my selected major. I knew DAAP at UC is the most competitive one to get into so I understand the outcome, BUT after the first year, what would I have to do to get into DAAP? my intended major is Architecture.

That means you need to take some courses before they can enroll you into that major or program. You need to do well so that you can eventually get it :)

Thanks for the reply. does that mean if I get good grades the first year, they will admit me as a Architecture major? For now, I am admitted into Exploratory Studies(undecided) at College of Arts & Sciences at McMicken College of UC. I understand that I can simply commit to a major offered there but is there an additional step such as applying(hopefully not) to DAAP? or any other colleges in UC?

Yes you will need to do well first. Then you can transfer whereever you want.

is there a possible case of me not getting in even with a decent grade. I ask this because of the competitiveness for this program.

Well that im not sure but like transfering into the program wouldn’t be that hard… Just make sure you do get the best possible grades as possible.

ikuzim, if you don’t mind me asking what are your stats? Do you have anything you could earn in the next few months (like art awards) that you could send them so they could reconsider?

I could try looking or one but no. My grades are only decent, I believe 3.2 unweighted gpa and 3.43 Weighted. My grades were not very good the freshmen year and it gradually got better. Taking 3 AP classes this senior year. 25 ACT. I am full Japanese and I have lived in the states for close to 10 years.
I just checked my mailbox today and I got a mail from UC saying “congratulations…blah blah blah…” they also pointed out that Second year admissions to the DAAP is unlikely. I’m still waiting on U of I for their Architecture Program. Do you know anything else I can do?

I do a lot of woodworking/ furniture making and I consider it kind of like a “job”. I have made and sold many pieces for a good amount of $. This is my strongest skill

So is U of C your instate college? Other than working hard as possible in the exploratory program I do not know what other advice I could give you, to convince them you are serious about Arch.

Also, by U of I do you mean Illinois or Iowa?

I live in Illinois. Yes University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. What I think is, since I am trying to get into the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, any thing related to this field will help me.
As I mentioned above, I have documented several pieces of my work. Also, I am in a Research & Development Class right now with 4 other students. 5 of us are making a big(4’x4’) Logo of our school, all out of various types of wood that is to be mounted on the wall of the utility room(meetings, signing letters of intent, etc.). I have plenty of skills and ability to show but the PROBLEM is, how to show what I have? Even If we were to get some sort of Award from the school Administrators.?

ikuzim- my son got into DAAP last year with scholarship and they do not consider a portfolio which I found rather odd for their program. My impression is that it is very stats driven with GPA, SAT/ACT scores. If you consider your portfolio strong, what about applying to schools that are more portfolio driven? MICA comes to mind. Also the art school in Minneapolis- can’t remember the name but it appeared very good. ASU has a strong design institute.

Don’t give up- there is a place out there for you, you may just have to dig deeper. As far as getting into DAAP later I would be cautious of this approach as a spot is not guaranteed from best you can gleam from them. If you are sure about design, then stick to your guns and find the right place. Best of Luck (My S ended up going somewhere else but I think he would have been happy at all of his acceptances).

Thank you so much for the clear answer. I really appreciate it! The decision for UIUC will come on Feb 15th as I was deferred until final review. I hope to get in because its better to be safe than sorry…by that I mean wasting a whole year to find out that I was not able to get in daap. Thanks again.

Yes, getting into DAAP is going to be tough as a transfer. If I remember, I think they wanted approximately a 3.5 GPA to transfer for Architecture.

Would you think that transferring into Interior design (daap) is just as difficult? Interior Design is my second choice.

Ikuzim, although I think that Interior Design is a bit easier to transfer to, the operative words are, “a bit.” It probably results in about the same GPA. Remember, Cincinnati is widely considered to be one of the top 3-4 schools for Interior Design in the U.S. This year, it was ranked second. See [Big Shifts in Design School Rankings for 2013 - DesignIntelligence](http://www.di.net/articles/big-shifts-in-design-school-rankings-for-2013/) . Moreover, with the best coop program among those mentioned, it really is debatable whether it should be ranked number one anyway.

Yes, I understand its one of the best in the country and I understand why I couldn’t directly be admitted. Is having a required GPA the only factor that is considered to be admitted into daap or any other transfer?
