Do you think this is a long shot or a possible chance? For PSU University Park
Applied DUS
Selected summer option
SAT: 1680
GPA: uw- 3.65// w- 4.1
11 AP/ honors classes & 1 penn state dual enrolled class
Lots of extra curriculars
I’m not sure if this makes a difference, but I applied early September
As always it depends on how competitive the field is and how heavily your school weights their grades. But in general with a 4.1W GPA and 1680 SAT, I think you definitely have a shot. The closer you are to the middle of the middle 50%, the more likely you are to get the starting campus and semester you chose. The more deviations from that, the more likely you are to be offered alternate options if you selected them.
FWIW, MY D went to summer session this past year and loved it. She got in with a 3.45 GPA and a 28 ACT (which corresponds roughly to a 1900 SAT).
Okay, thank you for your input! Was her 3.45 weighted or unweighted? And how was her extra curriculars? I’ve been trying so hard to find people with stats similar to mine so I can compare my chances because this waiting game is honestly so rough lol @jlhpsu
Her school barely weights. So while she took 8 honors classes through high school and did well in them, her unweighted GPA was a 3.4. Her weighted GPA a 3.45. That’s why I said it matters how your school weights. My daughters school is full of high achievers. To get an A, you need to earn a 94% or higher. Penn State asks every guidance counselor to submit a weighting and grading scale for your particular school because the weights can vary so much. A neighboring school has their A set as anything above a 90. To compare a 4.0 from that school to a 4.0 from our school would not be a good comparison because of the needed percentages to earn that grade.
Anyway, she had a lot of extra curriculars with Theater and clubs and work experience. But PSU doesn’t heavily consider those. She was also a double legacy, but also, not very much considered since I saw others with lower stats get in for fall and she got in for summer. (Again, maybe their school weighted differently or harder - that’s why it is SO hard to compare GPA stats). BUT, we are so happy she ended up going for summer. It was the best thing for her honestly. She settled into the campus and made friends and was eager and ready to go back for fall.
Good luck! Believe me, I know the waiting is torture. Take a look at the acceptance thread from last year and you will see that it nearly drove me crazy. This forum saved me, even if I was going crazy publicly sometimes
