So, if you were following either of the USC or NYU threads you'd see that I was accepted to both, but now I'm worried about my spring grades. My GPA when I applied was a 3.68, but I did poorly last spring due to a pretty bad depression. I had little to no motivation around finals just because I couldn't think straight (a lot of **** happened during the semester such as losing two family members and a bad break up). I was also taking the max of 19 credits (7 courses, 5 of them junior level) so I had my plate completely full as well.

I got a 3.13 in the semester; a C in macroeconomics and a C+ linear algebra. I took 3 classes in my major (a physics lab, quantum physics and solid state physics) and got a 3.57 in them.

So I was wondering what I should do when I send them my final transcript. Should I send a note explaining why I believe my GPA was so poor or do you think I'm worrying about nothing?

And I guess another important fact is that other than quantum and the physics lab, the only other REQUIRED course for my major was Calc III which I got a B+ in.

those 2 C’s will kill you, probably going to get rescinded. call them and plead your case!

Thanks of killing any confidence I had BPkid =(

here’s the tl;dr for the OP:

Theoretical Physics Lab (required for major): A
Quantum Physics (required for major): A
Solid State Physics (not required but recommended for major): B
Number Theory: B+
Calculus III (required for major): B+
Linear Algebra: C+
Macroeconomics: C

Those two C’s will not kill you. Your GPA has not fallen below a 3.13, so don’t worry so much.

The general rule of thumb is “Don’t dip below a 3.0.”

I think you’ll be fine.

Just talk with the admission officers. They will understand and I’m sure they won’t rescind your acceptance. Relax, you have a >3.0GPA and you have a legit reason!

This. Just call and ask. They are the ones who will ultimate make the decision not us.

Ok, so I just talked to an NYU Admissions Officer and he said that he’d be “very very surprised” if my two Cs got me rescinded. He did say, however, that there was a chance at me being put on probation, but that doesn’t seem too terrible, honestly.

You are fine. Don’t worry about it

is this real life? strong misc presence.

and coolio, no worries. I’ve heard to stick with the 3.0 rule of thumb, and the admissions guy even said you should be fine ;)

Haha yea. It’s funny…before I applied, I worried about getting my application in on time. After I applied, I worried about being accepted. After I got accepted, I’m worrying about my spring grades. And I know that after I pick between USC/NYU, I’ll worry if I made the right choice or not.

And this is the interwebs. There is always a strong misc presence. (=^_^=)

coolio, are you a miscer
