Accepted job then got grad school acceptance: deferral?

I was accepted to Stanford's aerospace engineering MS program. Before I received this acceptance, however, I accepted a job in the aerospace industry since getting into grad school and getting funding seemed to be an uncertain prospect.

My employer will pay for grad school, but only after I accrue a year of service. Also, my employer is a participant in Stanford's Honors Cooperative Program (HCP), which would allow me to earn my master's part-time and remotely. However, I did not apply for the HCP program in my initial application.

My question is whether it is likely that Stanford will allow me to enter the HCP now that I have been accepted and if they would let me defer my start of online classes until my employer can begin funding them (which would be around Summer of 2013). I don't want to pass up this opportunity and want to know how to best go about discussing this with the admissions officers. Thanks for any advice.

I really have no idea, but it wouldn’t hurt to try asking? I know for undergrads schools always allowed students the option to defer a year if they wanted (especially top schools), but I am not sure how it is for graduate school. It wouldn’t hurt to try asking them, to be honest, they may like it because you would be gaining some real work experience before starting your education with them, so in a way it’s a plus for them.

My guess would be that the part-time program is less competitive than the program you were admitted to, and you’d have no trouble getting admitted to it. With the employer paying for your classes, the school does not have to worry about helping you find funding.
