I just got my acceptance letter today, along with a $14,000 a year scholarship (I'm out of state). How much of a chance is there for me to get any additional help in the spring? I have an ACT score of 32, an SAT of 2070, and a 4.4 GPA (4.0 unweighted) along with strong extracurriculars and leadership positions. I'm in the top 3% of my class but my school does not rank. My major is Animal Sciences if that is relevant. Thank you!!!

You may get an additional smaller scholarship (like $1,000-4,000) but don’t expect too much more from Clemson from what I’ve heard in the past. I would look other places for additional scholarships. Some websites to look at are:

Son (junior, OOS) receives an additional $8K in Clemson scholarship funds beyond the OOS tuition waiver, so it is possible to get more assistance. Check out the Clemson scholarship link (below) and you’ll find a multitude of scholarships available to students depending on academic focus, GPA, year in school, etc. There are also opportunities to apply for programs that offer funds, e.g. Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars and Gilman Study Abroad Scholars. These types of programs do require ‘extra’ work and participation, but are worthwhile, as well as provide a source of monies if needed. Finally, as already mentioned, check out external scholarships and grants. Applications/essays are required but again, if you want to put in the effort, the money is out there. Often times, a nominal number of applications are submitted which improves the odds for those applying! You are a very good student so there should be merit-based scholarships you qualify for based on your intended major, region, extracurriculars, etc.

Also, be sure to complete your FAFSA because qualifications can be need-based (vs. merit-based) depending on the scholarship or grant. Worst case, you apply for a low interest Stafford loan which is available to all students (unsubsidized) as long as a FAFSA application is submitted.

Good luck! You’ve got a good chunk of the cost taken care of so with some additional effort you should be able to acquire some more financial assistance. My son applies for everything and anything and it has paid off for him - literally! :)

Did the additional 8K in scholarship money offered come at the same time as the initial OOS waiver or at a later date?

The additional funds came at a later time -I think in the spring. The total amount of assistance has increased a little bit each year.

Thanks so much for the advice and encouragement! I’ll definitely be looking into the other scholarships you suggested, and hopefully things will all come together in the spring and I’ll be able to call myself a Clemson tiger! As long as I can get into the honors college and get a few thousand more in aid, I’m think this is where I’m going to end up. Cant wait!!
