Accepted Off the Waitlist 4/26/12!

Hey everyone, so I got a surprise email today. I wasn't really ever planning to go to NEU, and during admissions I got deferred EA and waitlisted RD. I accepted the waitlist, because at that point I had no idea where I wanted to go.

So today, NEU sends me an email stating:
"I am pleased to inform you that you are among a small group of waitlisted students who now have an opportunity to be offered admission to the Fall 2012 entering class at Northeastern University."
Isn't that weird, it isn't even May 1st yet. Is there class size that small right now that they are afraid they will severely under enroll?

Anyone else got this email?

Probably not “severely under enroll”. But at this point, so close to May 1st, most students have decided what school they are going to. They must want to even out their numbers so they have the target (usually 2,800). Having a freshmen class that’s too small or too big would mess up dorms, classes, etc.

But yay! Congrats!

Congratsa! Looking at your stats in your posting history, I am surprised that you were waitlisted. What College did you apply to?

Last year NU was overenroled by 300 freshmen so I figured that they would take a conservative approach to acceptances this year, better to go to the waitlist than be overenroled again. You were likely near the top of the waitlist.

I was removed from the waitlist. I don’t think I got any aid besides a few thousand in Stafford.

Thanks!
@Tom: I applied to the Business school. Right now I have to decide between Boston University (very little aid), Brandeis (okay aid), and now NEU (slightly better than Brandeis aid).
I assume they also took too many Ivy-bound kids who never really planned to go to NEU and instead applied there as a safety.

@chimie: Its pretty ridiculous, they are giving me until 5 PM on 4/28 to respond, why can’t they give us until 5/1…

@sarora: Congratulations on admissions!

What really made me laugh is that in my financial aid package I got the “Excellence Scholarship” which is:
“The Excellence Scholarship is open to incoming fall freshmen at Northeastern University who are in the top 25 percent of the accepted applicant pool.”

I got waitlisted while being in the top 25 percent of the accepted applicants? Haha doesn’t really make sense.

Agreed. Welcome to the weird world of college admissions. If all of your aid is grants, BU is not worth and extra $21,000/year in cost compared to NU.

Brandeis is very different from NU and BU as you no doubt know. It depends on what type of environment you are looking for.

BTW, I read that a common reason for highly qualified students to be waitlisted is that they cut and paste essays into applications and end up leaving in references to the other school. That is the only reason I can imagine why you were not initially accepted.

Well I got about 8k-10k from each school in loans, the rest is grants/work-study.

Originally, BC was my top choice, but unfortunately I got waitlisted there. So since then, BU was my top choice because of its stellar business program, but unfortunately I could not imagine affording a college for 50k a year. That basically how much my parents made last year haha. So as much as I would love to go to BU its not financially feasible.

So I was set on planning to go to Brandeis and was about to submit my deposit when I, literally 20 minutes before submitting, got an email regarding my acceptance from NEU. The main question at this point is the 8k difference in grants worth it for the better education at Brandeis.

Brandeis is indeed a very unique school, I cannot say I like it per-say, but I suppose I can get used to it. I am more BC, bigger school, school spirit, suburban campus (which Brandeis is), partyish type of person. So Brandeis doesn’t really fit anything besides the campus haha. I like the more preppy vs. purely intellectual type, but with all that being said, I believe the education and degree from Brandeis is much better than NEU. I base that off rankings, average stats of accepted students, and job rates post graduation.

I hate this decision making process :|.

Sorry for the long post, cheers!

Edit: Oh, also, I checked my essay’s like 20x times and had other people review them before submission (I think I rechecked them too many times haha), so I don’t think that was the issue. But its interesting to learn that that happens.

I also got this email this morning. Does it mean that I’m accepted?
The email said that I should confirm this information by clicking “here” but there’s no link there. Do you have the same problem? I just emailed the Admissions and I hope they can solve it asap.

I got my email around 6PM and when I click “here” it works and brings me to the NEU page prompting me to log in. Once I log in, it asks me if I want to confirm my admission.

I know!
But the “here” link doesn’t work for me.
Can you please post the link here, please? I’d appreciate it.
Thank you so muchhhh :)

Same here. I really want to accept this, but they didn’t hyperlink correctly :(

For the person that it did work for, did it send you to myNEU? Cause that’s where regular students accept their admission, right?

Here is the link for those that can’t access the hyperlink.
Congrats!

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. I suspect that you were waitlisted for qualitative reasons (essay, recommendations, ECs) and your scholarship is based on quantitative reasons (test scores, gpa, etc).

After a day of complete chaos this Friday, I ultimately ended up receiving the link posted by vongockieuduyen. I had quite the crazy back and forth between my college counsellor, an admissions officer at NEU, and myself. I was, like I’m sure many of you were, very nervous that I would lose my admission spot. Anyway, it’s past the deadline, so I hope that you guys that received this email were able to resolve your issues with the link. Hope to see you guys at Northeastern!
