has anyone heard of a college making a mistake with an acceptance letter? Like sending an applicant an admitted letter when they werent supposed to be?

yeah. not firsthand, but stories like that are always floating around on cc. it's scary!

Cornell emailed hundreds of kids a few years ago that they were accepted when they weren't and i think UHartford did it this year.

That's terrible.

I can't imagine what I'd do if that'd happened to me. Being accepted to COrnell and then not, that's tough

Egh. That's terrible incompetence on part of the admissions offices. They are responsible for making sure the applicants receive the correct information, and not giving false hope.

wow..any more stories...what if it's just ONE person? would they accept them?

Where was that one story about how a girl was accepted to a certain university, but was rejected even after she moved into her dorms because it turns out she didn't fulfill requirements?

Mount Holyoke accidentally sent out 100+ mistaken acceptance e-mails a few years ago.

I remember last year UNC had accidentally sent out thousands of acceptance letters to students who weren't exactly accepted.

About 2,700 potential freshmen at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found out they were accepted one day. Then found out the next day they were not.

they usually happen through email

I heard that NYU sent a mixed up e-mail to a counselor at a nearby school (I have a friend who goes to that school), and the counselor told a guy that he was admitted. He was so excited he told all of his family and friends, and they all went celebrating, and then the counselor heard that the e-mail was messed up, and the guy was actually flat out rejected. I couldn't believe it when I heard the story; I felt soooo bad for the guy! It must have been horrible...

I wonder if people have ever sued the college based on "emotional distress"?

yes; one girl sued cornell for accepting her early, then figured out that they've sent it to the wrong person or something. apparently it didn't even have her name on the letter, but she didn't see

^ who won?

Quite recently (January 2008), the University of Hartford erroneously sent out 2,000 acceptance letters. They were supposed to be letters asking for additional information.

Gosh, these are really scary :(

FSU (Florida State) sent out a lot of acceptances they're now rescinding due to cut funding from the state. I believe this is this year.

Well, for some schools like the Ivies you know that your acceptance/rejection letter comes at a specific time...so if anything's suspicious then don't get ur hopes up.
