Hey all, I was wondering if anyone else had heard about anything like this...

A bunch of kids from my high school have gotten into Michigan ER. Some as their first choice, some as a high priority, some safety; some extraordinarily well qualified, some good, some okay, other's not outstanding, but all kinds have gotten in -- all were notified online through WolverineAccess.

However, another friend of mine, relatively well qualified, who has been checking the website frequently, and who has gotten no online notification about her decision, just got a letter in the mail that said she was deferred.

Does UMich do this regularly -- keeping acceptees updated through the website but letting deferrals/rejections know only through the mail?

How does this bode for the rest of us, like me, still waiting to hear?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt getting deferred mean they're just waiting for the rest of the pool to sort itself out, and then they make a decision on you? So technically that person really hasn't gotten a "decision" yet, hence the status of her online app. I mean, she could still be waitlisted, im just saying getting deferred doesnt really equal a waitlist/rejection.

Am I right on this? Sorry if this wasn't helpful. Good luck though, you should hear back soon

umich considers "deferred" a decision as far as their promise to give you a decision by dec.21st if you apply before oct.31st.....but they do have to make a final decision at some point after that...

Yup, happened to me, no "decision link" on Wolv Access, received letter of deferral today.

Stats UM GPA 3.68 (reg GPA with freshman grades weighted) 4.3
ALL Honors/AP classes
SAT Reading 780 Writing 720 Math 550
SAT II US History 780
Literature 750
ACT 30 (still bad math)
Great everything else

Looks like maybe this next week, no good news online is no good news

10/18 app complete
32ACT
1450 SAT
3.6 UM GPA

I am now convinced the deferral/rejection got lost in the mail.......Is there anyone else whose application was completed this early who hasn't heard yet???

my application was completed earlier than a lot of people who heard back... but i now think i'm getting deferred
application sent 10/26
everything received 10/31

gpa: 3.75 UM (but i'm hoping they keep in mind my straight A's so far senior year)
ACT: 32
OOS

i was just looking on naviance (my lifeline besides CC) and my stats for early are slightly higher than the normal accepted from my school...

besides GPA and scores is there anything else that UM really looks for?

Don't want to start a panic. MY app was marked as "complete" (last item received) Oct 30th. Rodney they're probably still mulling you over, your tests scores are stronger than mine and I assume more "balanced". The rest of you are very stong candidates, you'll probably hear this Thursday. The letter thing threw me though...looked like a piece of junk mail (but was from Michigan). I assumed since they consider "deferral" a "decision" (Kind of an oxymoron) that I would have had that oft-described "decision status" link...not so lucky.

ooooohhhh I love my school's naviance site. Wish they had the stats of just this years applicants though (without averaging them in with the last 5 years, cuz it's gotten tougher). I know they take a while to update it, but I am OOS and 21 kids have applied to UM this year and only one is shown as "in". My stats are a tad under my school average for acceptance into Michigan and considering it's 5 years worth of stats, I imagine if they were based on just this year they's be even lower. Have you used the "scattergrams" Very coooooool. Mine is a large public high school so there are tons of actual kids factored in and because they come from the exact school with the exact demographic pool as me...it's a closer "apples to apples" thing than CC (but CC is more up-to-date if you want this year's applicants stats....and who doesn't?)

salem- thanks for helping us still waiting rather than blocking yourself off from the boards- it is very appreciated
i'm not quite sure exactly what the "deferral" status means but it still sounds like you're still a strong candidate, i wouldn't rule out being accepted later or wait-listed

as to everyone else- the whole way they have been accepting people seems very odd- i've been reading these boards for a while now and it seems as if boarderline people have been accepted while easy-in's are still waiting. I'm assuming the application process is a little more random than I had originally thought.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS WEEK!

ilk, it has to do with when people submit their applications, imagine how many people submitted near the deadline. Also, remember that it's really hard to judge different GPAs when they're from different schools. But definitely there's a ton of randomness involved.

guys i was just deferred by mail today. Submitted on September 20th, with everything in on the 26th. So dont complain about not hearing, i waited one month thinking i could hear only to get deferred, not a good feelin considering I love Michigan like no other.

I'd be lying if I said "I didn't see it coming" (reference previous 20 posts on the Michigan Boards) But I knew that whatever I heard, (even if outright rejected) I would post as it would give others waiting some insight.

I also Dig you guys, but Michigan was a 3rd choice for me (although a stretch) and I got in 2 and 4 (with a ton of merit $$$$) so I'm feeling good. Once I preferenced them in my head (my 1st choice ED and my second which was VERY close to my first) I pretty much mentally ruled out Michigan unless I hadn't got in the first two. Since I'm just in it for bragging rights and a little family prestige, I certainly wouldn't mind getting in once I paid my fee...

But either way my decision is made on the 14th and my search over!!!! And ANN ARBOR wasn't gonna be my address come August either way, so it's KARMA...hopefully someone more deserving (harder working) and Wolverine fanatical will take the spot!!!!!!!

(I just can't bear anymore in-state accepted posts from kids with no AP's and a 24 ACT)

Same thing happened to me last year. Nothing appeared online, but I received mail saying that I had been deferred (3.6 UM, 32 ACT, in-state, alumni, pretty good EC's), got deferred around mid October) - app complete late september. Checked online in mid-November to hear I had been accepted and got the mailed package about two days later after finding out online.
