Accepted Portfolio - increased chance of admission?

I was wondering if anyone had a rough estimate as to how much a school accepting your portfolio increased your chances of admission to that particular school..

MICA accepted my portfolio (RISD doesn't accept portfolios at NPD) at NPD, and I applied by the early action deadline (Jan 5th), so I'm just wondering...

Anyone have any idea as to how much getting your portfolio passed actually counts?

I was wondering the same thing. My daughter also had her portfolio 'accepted' at MICA on NPD. Although I do know others that have had their portfolio reviewed 3 times by MICA without being 'accepted'. In any case, the letter go out in a week.

That makes me feel a bit better. I'm just reeeeaally hoping for a "yes" letter in the mail.

The wait is absolutley painful.

If the portfolio is accepted up front isn't that an indication that -in their eyes- the student is partly-accepted?

I mean, the portfolio for most schools is half if not more important in terms of admission results. So if you get your portfolio accepted, wouldn't that mean you're half-way through?

Don't worry about it. I think you'll get in. :) I think the only way they'd reject you is if your grades are really subpar... as in Ds, Fs... Art schools put a lot of weight on the portfolio for admission.

Good luck though. lol. I know what you mean when you say the wait is painful. I just sent in a portfolio today and can't wait for a decision in three weeks time. It's like leading up to the moment you work, work, work and then there's a lull and then you have to wait. lol.

Hang in there.

My personal experience has been as follows:

I went to several portfolio days and had my work reviewed by SAIC, RISD, Pratt and MICA.

SAIC liked my portfolio and said it was acceptable. Two days after submitting my application, I was accepted for admission.

Pratt accepted my portfolio on the spot on three different occasions; open houses and portfolio days. One reviewer said it was the best portfolio he had seen all day. I also got straight A's at Pratt's Pre-College program. However, I was deferred upon application.

MICA liked my portfolio and I was invited to apply early and was admitted.

RISD also liked my portfolio, and gave very helpful feedback. I am still waiting to hear from them.

You just never know. Use portfolio days to get info about the schools, check out your competition, and most of all listen to what the reviewers say, and tailor your individual portfolio to that school. I believe that the admission decision to art school is very subjective depending upon who is doing the reviewing. Also, take note, most school despise manga, so beware of including it unless that is what you want to do for the rest of your life in a tiny, lonely little room.

Do any of you have websites where i can see your work?

henry - my less structured site is http://weneversleep.net which is kind of like, casual photography and some of my fine art stuff. if you're on facebook i'll give you the link to the majority of my portfolio. Message me.

So, i got into MICA! (YAY!)

still deciding if i want to go ahead and apply to risd. All i need to do is send them my statement..

Congratulations Patois! My D was also accepted.

Congrats to you all! This is very exciting isn't it? I hope everyone is very happy where they go. I do believe this whole process works and you end up where you belong.

Best wishes,
IM

I just had to join in on the MICA love here. I'm applying to their MFA graphic design program, and every interaction I've had with them has just been so positive. They haven't given me the run-around on anything and have made the application process the smoothest out of any school I've applied to.
