Accepted/Rejected Students: Essays

To all past and current NYU applicants, the following information would be helpful if to future applicants struggling on their essays:

1) Were you accepted? (If yes, which school/program were you accepted to? If you are a current applicant, please indicate your prediction.)
2) Are you a freshman or transfer applicant? (If you're a transfer applicant, please indicate your year; ex: Sophomore, Junior)
3) What was your essay topic? (If you're a transfer applicant, what were your reasons for transfering in the essay?)
4) How many words and pages was your essay? Was it single or doubled space (or other line spacing)?

My answers:
1) I was rejected a years ago. I applied to the College of Arts and Science.
2) Former Freshman Applicant
3) I wrote about how I want to follow my dad's path into the same college as him.
4) I was about 600-700 words. It was doubled-spaced and was 1.5 pages.

anyone? 17 views and still no one?

I applied to Steinhardt as a nutrition major, but I think I got rejected because of a C+ in AP chem & mediocre gpa (3.34).

Any who, the essay—> Helping some guy out the closet & my intellectual growth from the experience.

I think I was rejected due to lack of leadership positions and a overwhelming perfect essay that sounds too good.

Grammar Mistake:
4) It was…

The lack of feedback is due to the fact that the majority of people who applied from CC applied RD and have not heard back yet.

jh…you applied RD right? so you don’t know you didn’t get in. I was a mess after the ED GSPs went out cause I thought it was my only chance at NYU. I am a realist and there were a whole bunch of us with dark posts that week or two between GSP letters and the acceptance letters. Lots of us DID get in (I had a 550 math SAT!!!) SO don’t give up hope. I’ve posted before that I liked your essay idea. I believe it was my writing that got me in as it’s my strength and they had all of those tricky SHORT SHORT answers. I wrote about my turning away from organized religion. The paid college consultant told me “it was anti-semetic” and offensive. (it was neither) and told my mother “she NEVER allow her child to send in such a risky eassy” (not a kind word to say about it) My mom sent it to a few very religious jews, I sent it to my Guidance counselor and AP composition teacher (both have read hundreds of application essays) Comments I recieved back were “don’t change a word…it’s brilliant” and “Best I’ve read in 20 years of reading them”. Not that I was thinking of replacing it. I think when it comes to these essays (and a school that receives 37,000 applications) you CAN’T be safe if you’re a borserline candidtae. You gotta push the envelope. That essay got me into several EA schools, (some with hard merit $$$) and NO rejections.
That said, I think a great essay/essay idea will USUALLY only put you over the edge if you’re within the stat range for scores and GPA (abeit low)

Best of luck, maybe see you in the Village come August?

Great advice Salem1! its nice to hear encouraging things for those of us who are so anxious about decisions.

got in ED this year-Stern. I wrote about the fleeting moment of seeing a homeless man in the subway under 42nd street and the impact it had on me.

Question:

For the NYU essays that say “Limit your response to 7 lines, or approximately 500 characters,” how exactly should this be interpreted? For example, one of my answers is:

Font - 12pt
Characters (with no spaces) - 488
Characters (with spaces) - 594
Lines - 7

Is this acceptable?

I’m a transfer btw, not sure if freshman applicants have the same essay questions.

1) Accepted. Stern.
2) Former Freshman Applicant.
3) Wrote about my first Christmas/childhood/family (I was born in another country and my family moved here when I was little).
4) 600 words. Double-spaced. I actually wrote this for my UC applications.

Accepted. Stern

Freshman applicant

Wrote about Fantasy Football and how much fun it is, lol

500-600 words a bit over, but whatever.

adriennevy, use the nyu application if you can cause I think it automatically restricts it for you. If not, I would just be sure not to go over too much.

Do not exceed the limit for Personal Statements. They can see that easily online. However, the essay can be uploaded in a .doc document so I believe you can pass for a few more. The point of the limit is that they do not have to read as much. If you need more space, do not include more than one line in the additional information section for each question.

Spaces are included in the count of the characters in the online application. If you use the online application, you can see a preview in PDF to check if any words were cut off.

Thank you.

1) I got into Tisch last year.
2) I am currently a freshman.
3) I wrote about how I was inspired by a girl I was jealous of (for being better at me in pretty much everything) when she told me about her motivation for doing everything well.
4) Double spaced, 2 pages. I think the application asked for a 500-word essay… I don’t remember.

Good job, you made a negative view of being jealous of someone into your advantage. It is also not a topic that everyone can easily write about themselves.

I’m bummed that as a transfer, I don’t get a choice of topic…

“Transfers only: Please discuss your interest in transferring to New York University. Explain your reasons for wanting to leave your current college or university (or if not currently in attendance, why you left the last institution you attended), and describe how you feel your educational goals can be better achieved at NYU.”

Unless… does this portion include everyone, even transfers?
“You may select one of the following topics, or you may choose to tell us something about yourself that has not been presented to your satisfaction in this application.”

I’m not satisfied with my topic, can I just choose something else?

“Note: Transfer students are required to complete Essay D only.”

Nevermind.
