At the risk of offending some...

Has anyone else's child become nervous about meeting "normal people" at college after they joined the facebook page created for their incoming class at the college they have decided on? This has happened to my child and several graduating friends of my child, all going to different schools. My child unjoined and decided to wait to meet folks on campus hoping this wasn't a representative sample...

Actually, just the opposite for my daughter, some people seemed very normal and likeable on facebook, but she really didn’t like them when she met them in person.

What I’ve noticed is that many of the kids who join such groups are the more extreme on the social side…which might intimidate the student who is more quiet and shy. Many of the other quiet/shy kids aren’t joining, so these sites can wrongfully suggest that the school will be full of super social kids.

I don’t mean “more extreme” in a bad way…just super out-going…which might intimidate the quiet students.

My introverted daughter has been a little put off by the OMIGOD WE ARE SO GOING TO BE BEST FRIENDS AND THIS CLASS WILL BE THE BEST CLASS IN HISTORY!!! tone of the admitted students group.

She said things have calmed down significantly recently and that some serious and intelligent debates about politics have ensued.

My D is also put off by posts which rejoice that this school has a higher hook-up rate than another school and others which discuss their impending drunken binges. Why would kids talk about this on a board with admins from the admissions committee?
