Accepted student open house

The first one is this weekend. Is anyone going?

reeinaz - we are only 3 hrs from Beloit, but my D will do regular overnight visit in March after we see the fin aid package. Let us know about the visit.

Psblstnr - my son is going to the March one by himself since he got a travel grant. They have the program for the Feb one on their website and it seems like it should be a fun and informative event. I’m just hoping someone gives some feedback so I can tell him what to be on the lookout for.

My daughter is there now. It’s a good time to find out if she likes cold weather  I don’t know much except she arrived, and there are 80 kids there for the weekend program.

That sounds like a nice sized group. We picked the March open house in part because I was worried that because this is a long weekend, the number of students attending this one would be too big. Luckily the March one coincides with spring break so he won’t miss any school. Please share what your daughter thought of her visit.

My H took my son for the first open house last weekend. S was very favorably impressed, and H said the college did an excellent job representing itself. S thought his host and the other students and prospies were very nice. H had an especially good time at a student improvisation event.

H and S also visited two other schools which were “just okay”. Right now Beloit is the number one choice!

We attended the open house with my daughter. The only time that there seemed to be a lot of kids is when everyone was in the science building visiting the tables of the different majors and groups on campus. I thought the sessions for parents were very good, and thought that the school president did a great job in his welcoming speech. DD really liked it, and had nice time with her host. We visited it on the same trip as two other schools, and now one has dropped down, and Beloit is tied for first with the other one. I thought it was well worth it!

D received FA package from Beloit today. So far, the best offer we have. My only concern is their tuition jumped from 39K to almost 41K this year. Will schedule overnight visit for the last week of March. Any advice on dinning options around the campus?

No FA came this weekend for my S. I’m wondering if they’re holding off until after his open house …lol.

reeinaz - we’ve done FAFSA and Beloit forms in early January, IRS retreival in early February. Maybe they are processing their FA by those dates? By the way, Knox’s package was very good too, but D lost interest in it after the overnight visit.

His FA letter came in the mail yesterday and it looks like we have a winner. As long as he doesn’t absolutely hate the place when he vists this weekend (I really can’t imagine that happening), I think Beloit is it.

reeinaz - very happy for you and your S! We r going there on Mar 28 for overnight. Let us know about his visit.

Psblstnr - thanks. I had no idea how much relief I would be feeling now. And I will definitely report back.

It’s nice to see new prospective Beloit parents talking about Beloit! My daughter attended Beloit (she graduated several years ago), I’ve had several students attend Beloit, and have dear friends whose children also attended Beloit.

Beloit is a very special place. Beloit is not flashy, but it is a wonderful place to learn who you are, get a great education, and be part of a friendly, caring community. The professors and adminstration at Beloit truly care about students, and Beloit students also care about each other. Like all colleges, Beloit isn’t right for every one. But, when the match is right, Beloit can truly be magical. My daughter still keeps in touch with several of her professors, and had wonderful experiences and opportunities at Beloit. She graduated with amazing self-confidence and self-knowledge (and a great resume, thanks to Beloit’s Center for Entrepreneurship). The education she received at Beloit was worth every penny (can’t say that about my son’s better known and more expensive college).

Someone asked about dining options near campus. The Beloit Inn, which is just down the hill from campus, has excellent food and a nice atmosphere. If you like more of a sports bar option, with some of the best prime rib we’ve had any where, try Jersey’s, which is out by the Fairfield Inn (near Wal Mart). It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it is a fun place with great food.

For those of you whose children will soon be attending Beloit - welcome! Some of the nicest people I have met have been Beloit parents, and I wish you and your child a happy journey over the next four years!

Carolyn,
Thanks so much for posting. I’ve actually read a lot of your old threads in searching for Beloit info on CC and have appreciated your perspective. We were at accepted students weekend the past two days and had a great experience. D would like to commit right now, I told her she had to think about it for 48 hours and let the dust settle a bit…

Like probably a lot of other people, she had been concerned that Beloit might be “too weird” for her (quirky = a good fit for D, but totally bizarre antisocial people = definitely not good). However, we did not find Beloit strange or weird at all. The students we encountered seemed to be kind, interesting, outgoing, down to earth. Comfortable with themselves and maybe a few that were a bit offbeat, but the general feeling we got was that the students were normal, confident, energetic college kids who were really interested and involved in what they were doing. And that they had the support of faculty and staff to pursue their interests passionately. I got the feeling that kids for the most part felt really at home there. D’s host was a great match for her and really made her feel comfortable. And I also was impressed with the staff and faculty presentations I went to.

So for us the distance/transportation is a bit of a challenge, the campus is indeed less “manicured” than many similar colleges, and the town doesn’t have a lot to offer – but in terms of curriculum and faculty, general “vibe” of students, and my impression that Beloit will be able to provide D with what she needs in terms of support, I’ve been really impressed.

My son told me I can go ahead and send in the deposit. He really enjoyed his experience on campus and especially the classes he sat in on, a biology class, an art class, and two theater classes. As proof of their small class size, he said the prospies in one class outnumbered the actual students  He said that he had more fun on Monday, going to class, than he did on Sunday. He absolutely raved on and on about the college president and the other students he met. And he said the food was good. Yay Beloit!!

So happy for your son, reeinaz! What a relief to have the decision made. My S is very close to being a definite yes, as well. Go Turtles  !

Update: Deposit sent to Beloit :)

Congrats to plantmom and reeinaz on having the decision! We are at least 2 weeks away from that point and its driving me crazy. Good luck to you and your kids!
